Default ok! what to buy, 749 dark, or SS1000DS grey/red???

The 1000ds makes considerably more power up to 7500rpm,and is "all done" at 8k, when the 749 just explodes ahead out to 10.5k rpm

neglible curb weight difference, take a healthy dump before getting on the 749 and all is equal.

the 749 dark is $1000 more, or on the 60 month plan, $22 bucks a month= 4 trips to starbucks.

the glossy paint and red wheels on the SS are very cool to me, but the dark is the best looking of the 749/999 biposto bikes. i just dont go for the red pillion seat on the red 749s, must be biposto, need room for the next ex-fiancee (can I "re-gift" a princess cut E color 2ct total weight platinum ring?)

What has the best "F-U" factor? which has the best B-aah-ch appeal? Ladies please chime in, your part of the joy of riding!

Joy of Riding experience?, I have no clue, ergos seem equal, I just came off an ST4S, took awhile to get used to the twin after the smoothness of VFR's, but not going back.
i'm sold on ducati, If I was rich I'm have a zero miles m900ie in the middle of the living room where the coffee table should be!
Thanks for your support

The 1000 is what I would get. Better for pillions and I guess would have a better torque spread and make it lower down in the rev range where you normally are. I thing the new 749 and 999 don't look at good as the older style IMHO, but the SS still looks good.

Performance-wise, I think the 749 would be the way to go, just because you're getting a higher-tech engine and chassis.

However, if you just want a nice bike, and you're not so concerned with cutting edge technology, go for the 1000DS. Simple, reliable engine, solid chassis...

And though the matte black Dark color looks cool now, I think in the long run you'll like the gray and red better. That color combination will always look good...

My opinion my be a little biased, but if you're looking for a street bike, then go with the SS. Simple maintenance, great reliability, and great usable power for the street. With an aftermarket seat and some bar risers, this is a very comfortable bike you could ride all day. I have ridden with a guy on a 749 who is an excellent rider in a fairly "spirited" environment. My very slightly modified (pipes/airbox/PC) 900 was a good match on the street for his stock 749. I am sure he would have taken me on the track or any long straight, but on the back roads we were on, performance wise, things were pretty equal. Oh, I would say rider skill was about the same, with the nod going to the other guy if you had to choose a better rider.

That being said, I would love to have a Ducati Superbike.... I do think the SS would be a better street, daily driver than the 749. I guess BOTH would be about perfect!!!!

If you spend most of your time below 100mph, I would go for the ss. The only time my 1000 disappoints me is the odd straight line burst where it just gives up a little too soon for my liking.

The 749 would outperform on the track with the tack allways above 8 grand sure, but as stated above for a 900, on the street the 900 was holding its own.

I nearly opted for the superbike myself, it was a tuff all round decision.

The current line up of Ducati Supersports, are probably the best daily driver/street bikes out; simple 2V bulletproof engine, lithe chassis, small size and decent 2 up riding comfort. I had the same choice to make, and took a 900SS - the 1000DS can only be better. At this point, you should expect a SUBSTANTIAL discount on any remaining 2004 inventory.

In my experience, the modern SS is a very poor choice if you have a pillion rider in mind. Power is okay(ish) but ergos are a pain for the unfortunate victim and restrictive for the pilot. I've never taken a passenger on a 749 but I would guess that would be even less suitable.

Going from a ST4 to either of these bikes with passenger accommodations as part of the equation is going to leave you wanting.

Thought about an ST3?

I recently (11/04) did 1,300 miles in one weekend on my '99 SS900 (hey BCM, it's coming your way on the 22nd, and I WILL send you an e-mail soon, I promise!).

No ill affects, great long distance ergos with a tank bag, happy as a clam in the twisty stuff. The 1000DS can only be better still, I would think.

However... there's a guy on this list that I've met out on the back roads with a 749 who makes the SS900 look like your father's oldsmobile. That's his thing: Fast, furious, & fun, but mostly local riding.

I kinda prefer to consider my 900SS as a long distance, unique touring machine that's also great for saturdays & sundays in the twisties.

But... 749 it's not.

So it largely depends on HOW you want to ride, in my opinion.

Just my

You've already answer your question. Which bike will suit your riding style best?

Between my Fiance and I, we own a 2004 749S, a 2001 900SS, and a 2002 M750S. We just got the 749 in October, so I haven't been able to ride it much. The 900SS has 14,000 miles on it in 2 1/2 seasons worth of riding. I don't think I'll ever sell it. That being said, I haven't touched the SS since we got the 749. I love the 749! It is just as comfortable as the SS. You do have a tough choice. I don't care for the 749dark because of the lower grade components. The 1000DS motor has got to be a real stump puller. Good luck with whatever you choose. You'll be happy with either.

I really like the SS, the colors will always look nice. I love my SS, and my next bike is gonna be the 749 (not for a few years though). I have no idea how they compare as far as riding, power, better on the street vs the track. I just think the SS looks really nice, I think you should get that one.
