rear seat cowling for 800ss???
I'm doing some work on my 03' 800ss this winter.
I've considered buying a Sargent seat, but what I really want to do is change the rear tail section to make the bike appear "monoposto".
Anyone have any experience with something like this and possible sources??
Thanks
Larry

Re: rear seat cowling for 800ss??? (larrydk)
I put a Ducati Performance solo cowl on my fiance's SS800, which she wrote about in this thread:
http://speedzilla.zeroforum.co...36592
It's really nice-looking, and it comes already color-matched with a white number plate background. The only drawback is, it makes it hard to remove the seat. The seat lock is hidden underneath the new cowl, so to access it, you have to remove the two screws holding the cowl to the frame.
It's kind of a pain in the ass to reinstall the cowl each time, so she keeps her tool kit and registration in her tank bag. And in order to access the battery, you have to remove the cowl, the seat, and raise the tank. To avoid having to do this often, we installed a Battery Tender quick-connect plug to the battery, with the two-prong plug zip-tied to the frame. This way, you can just plug your charger cord into the plug any time you want to, without having to mess around with all that.
It's a small price to pay, but the cowl makes the bike look so much better. Next step will be some high-mount pipes, and getting rid of the passenger pegs and rear fender assembly...

That is exactly what I want. Do you recall how much it was and know of any sources. BCM Ducati told me that they have them on back order.

I'm really happy with the seat cowl. It make the bike look a lot more clean ( I think). Like Scott said, it does have the draw back of bad access. I always ride with a tank bag or a back back, so carrying the tools and paperwork is no big deal. I just can't wait to put the high mounts on!

That was cruel! If she would do that to you during the Holidays, she wasn't worth it in the first place!
As for my girlfriends, unfortunately I'm the only one who rides. I get lots of questions about friends of mine who ride (or have tattoos!), but all of my friends are "normal".
I'll keep an eye out, though!

WOW, that really looks good!!! I had been debating about those but never seen a good photo. I really like it. I think I would get the solid red one but I still really like it.
My wife rides also, and we just took a saftey course together. Right now we share an '04 800, which I'm sure you will agree, is a perfect bike for her. Hopefully in the near future, I want to get a matching 1000DS for me and the 800 be her's full time!!!!!!!!!

Do you remember what that seat cowl cost? I asked my dealer about one, and the price we came up with like like $670..waaayy more than I really want to spend for a piece of plastic, they suggested looking at one from sharkskinz. Has anybody seen a seat cowl from them?

Re: rear seat cowling for 800ss??? (austin)
The DP "mono" seat cowl is EXPENSIVE for what it is. A dealer near me was selling it for $750! I just bought the BCM replacement tail section. This replaces everything, so you need to put a foam seat on it. It is really designed for track use only. Sharkskinz does not make a tail section for the current SS.
My fiance rides as well. She has a M750Sie for the street and a 749S for the track. You gotta find a local riding club to get in with the female riding crowd.

This is getting a little off subject, but I wish I could find some more female riders. I just joined a message board called Cycle Angels. It is an all female group. No boys!!!
Rotty900ss, one more thing, I like your dog! Very cute

Thanks Jessica. Your's is handsome as well. Ranger is the best dog I have ever had . His personality is great and everyone I met loves him too, even nondog lovers. That picture was taken when he was a year old. He is starting to turn alittle gray now.

Just a confirmation, called BCM today, and they want 670 for the nice solo cowl... go figure, more expensive than the carillo rods and 785 pistals. Where is Dixo carbon fiber when you need them?

Re: (smakbiam)
I started this thread since I'm doing some work on my 800. The cowl is simply one of the biggest "rip-offs" to date.
Keep in mind, for almost the cost of that piece of plastic, you can purchase "slip-ons" for a bit of performance.
Ducati should be ashmed of themselves for the level of profit.

Re: (larrydk)
I had one of these for a while. They look pretty cool, but that's about it. They don't fit all that well without some work, and they have a tendency to develop stress cracks in the gel coat. They are not plastic. If they were, maybe they wouldn't be so expensive. They are fiberglass, and are actually pretty lightweight. The workmanship is "a little rough" to say the least. My tail was uneven around the taillight cutout. You can find them pretty inexpensive if you look around. I bought mine from a guy off this sight a while back. I think I paid around $250.00 which isn't bad when you consider your getting a hand laid fiberglass piece that is already painted to match your bike. The money DP wants is a little over the top though!!! I ended up selling mine and getting the Sargent seat. I use my bike to commute, and having no under seat access was a killer. With the Sargent, not only do you get the access, but you also get more storage than stock and some usefull swing out hooks for your tailbag. I would have kept my monotail if the bike was a weekend play-bike, but for daily use, it just didn't work out that well. My !!

That is for the cowl. They charge $250 for the race tail replacement.

I have seen the race cowls that BCM has, pretty nice pieces, but if I remember correctly they need paint. Have BCM drop off the unpainted tail to Rob Nigl, he is local to BCM and does killer work. Very detail oriented and uses top quality materials. He did a couple of repair jobs on fairings I had and no kidding, they came out better than new.

Re: (Nick D.)
Right, just to clarify, I was talking about the solo cowl not the race tail. Solo cowl comes painted ready to install, what I was quoted for was the Dark cowl, but I bet they all are the same price wise... the race tail you definately have to paint. I ended up getting the black sargent seat, with black piping, ends up being cheaper and my ass will be happier about this decision.
Why can't they just make this out of pastic and easily removable?
