I haven’t been here for a long time, not that I was much of a contributor. I’ve had an employment change and the new gig isn’t surf friendly. Anyway to the point, I’m taking a trip from Iowa to deals gap and the surrounding areas and I’ve decided to finally add some saddlebags to my touring equipment. Was hoping some of you had suggestions/experiences/pics of bags on a 99+ SS. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
I used a Nelson Rigg Deluxe saddlebag for a Deals Gap trip - this is the only picture I have of it. Worked well - nicely made and HUGE capacity. I have hi-rise pipes so the fitment had to be adjusted throughout the journey to prevent the bags shifting and touching the pipes. Next time I do a long trip I'll switch to my stock pipes I think. Hope this helps.
I have some Fieldsheer stuff that looks about like the above Nelson luggage. It works fine but is a little awkward to mount and unmount. I have been looking at Oxford sport luggage as a sleeker alternative.
You can always do the frugal routine and throw everything into a backpack and strap her down to the seat. I use this along with my double tank bag on my '99 900SS and it works great! Just my opinion though....

LOL.. yes, they are packed to capacity in that picture. The friend I rode down to Deal's Gap with said that from behind it looked like my legs were sticking straight out - cracked him up...

Funny, that is exactly what I used to do before I bought the soft luggage. I strapped by Lowe Alpine internal frame pack on the back. The only part that was a pain was making sure all the straps were secured so they did not droop down onto the chain or wheel.
All right, thanks for all the responses and pics! Edwyun, I don’t know weather to curse you or thank you for the pics of your Latin lovely, when I see a previous generation ss like that it takes my breath away and I could kick my self in the back side for getting a the turd model. Thanks. I found some classy leather bags by chase harper that seem just right for a duc but more $ than I should part with. So far eclipse p38 or RKA are what I’m leaning toward but I need to check out the Nelson line better. I’ll post a decision tomorrow as I have had tooooooo much fathers day scotch this evening to commit to an order. Thanks again, except you Edwyun , it will take time to forgive.
If you really hate your modern style SS please get rid of it. Some of us happen to like them ...
Anyway has anybody put hard bags from either the Monster or ST on an SS? Surely possible with a little bit of work and be far better than soft bags ... in fact I cannot understand (or though I am sure you guys will tell me ) why Ducati does not sell the brackets.
I apologize if I have offended. I do actually like the new ones quite well or I would not be owning my second one, it’s just that I don’t see an older one very often. Seeing one as nice as edwyuns and booze fumes taking control of my emotions... well you know, if you enjoy the drink that is.
I have wondered about the st bags as well, haven’t heard of anyone doing/trying it. I wouldn’t think the brackets would be to difficult to make or have made.

All this talk about bags got me interested, as I now have to commute 80 miles a day for my new job. The backpack thing is getting pretty old!! I have to carry a uniform, lunch, gym clothes, and the occasional publication. That backpack gets heavy after a while and I don't like how it restricts my movement. After looking around, I ordered a set of Tourmaster Cortech series sport bags from Kneedragers.com. Even though I will probably just use the tailbag for most of the time, the price was right so I got the set (tail bag and saddle bags). They came in today, but somehow they screwed up and gave me a blue set of saddle bags!! I wanted red. The tail bag was the right color. Kneedragers is sending me the red bags along with return postage for the blue set, and was sorry for the mix up. Anyway, the bags are well made and look like they will hold a lot of stuff. I put the saddle bags on the bike just to see how they fit, and they go on perfectly. The tailbag fits the same. I have a Sergents seat with the swing out hooks and the bungee cords on the tail bag work well with them. Nothing touching the paint! Nice bags, and if you are looking for soft sport luggage, it is well worth it to check these out. Sorry no pics yet (it looks real funny with blue bags!!), but if you got to the website, they have some good pics there.
Saddlebags are like shoes, you have to try them on to make sure they fit. The retail out lets in my area are slim to none and time was critical so I bought a fairly cheep and small set, Eclipse p-38s. I have removed the rear seat cowling/bodywork which aloud the bags to be mounted much closer to the bike. Also I went under the seat with the straps it is a very nice and clean fit, the bike is only about 1 ½-2 inch wider on each side. They are 15 liters each. I have an old joe rocket tank bag that the top larger half separates and can be used as a back pack. I strapped the top half to the back of the seat as a tail pack and am able to pack seven days clothes, shoes and some leather pants. I would post some pics but have recently buggered the software for my camera and haven’t located the cd yet. The hard bags will have to be a future project.
I'm a little late here, but I thought I would share anyway. I am using the Oxford "Sports Humpback" luggage. The tank bag gets used whenever I ride to work and I have never used the saddlebags yet. I bought them at a great price "just in case".
I don't know how good of a deal it will be for you in the US, but this is a good price in the UK and this luggage is top notch. I am sure the company will ship to the US if you are interested. I don't see the "Humpback" panniers that I got, but they do still have the next size up available. Here is the Link: http://www.infinitymotorcycles...ID=48
