gsxr forks?
does anyone know if/what year gsxr forks will fit an early model ss? it just seems that there are alot more available from wrecked ricers, so prices seem a lot lower. also what other front parts would be necessary, ie axle, wheel, brakes, etc...

First find out the diameter of the forks. Top triple on SS is 50mm and bottome is 53mm. If that works then you have a few other items to worry about. Brake and fender mounts probabbly won't work with your stuff and most importantly is the axle size of the GSXR. IIRC SS is 20mm.
There are a lot of issues so you'll probably find it difficult to swap. The other thing you might look into is the size of the steering head. Maybe you could swap the whole front end.

there are a few variables, but it can be done. relally anything can be done with enough $$$
1) check if you have a 25mm axle wheel. if no, you're gonna need it and just raised the price of your conversion by $200-$300 bucks.
2) which triples? in some cases you can have your SS triples bored and/or shimmed to accept the GSXR/R1/ZX forks. this is your best case scenario. in RARE cases there is a very small chance GXSR/R1/ZX triples could fit with little modification. worst case you need your SS steer tube pressed out and fitted into the GSXRetc. triple provided it's even remotle possible, and again raises your cost $200-$300
3) axle? it's best to use whichever axle from whichever set of triples you use.
4) brake calipers? you'll likely have to use calipers from whatever for tubes you use due to bolt spacing.
5) rotor offset and diameter? start with rotors for the wheel you have, and offest can be made to apply evenly to rotors by shimming caliper if you have std. mount calipers, or shim rotor if fork tubes/ calipers are post-mount (A.K.A. radial) rotor diameter can be matched thru various rotor diameters, (COSTLY $$$) or if you got a set of post mount (radial, but that's a misnomer, and another post) forks/calipers, you can shim up the calipers for larger rotors.
it's a fair bit of work but not impossible, but not likely bolt-on either. it's better to be left over with extra parts than to need, so i would do some serious homework and try and find as complete as possible front end to start from. i have converted a few SV650's to various front ends BTW....

I don't mean to shoot down your plan but there's a ton of other "tried and true" options out there. There's a wealth of info on swapping over to SBK forks as that one's been done 1,000 times. You could also pick up a good set of late model SS Showa forks (which already fit) and spend all this time, money, and effort on getting those suckers worked over into a simply awesome set of forks. Just some ideas...

this is really a trial and error proposition. If I had a complete front end, so I did not have to worry about wheels and brakes. I would take off my front end and try it. first thing to do is measure the length and see if they are even in the ball park, from the top of the triple clamp to the axle. I have had mixed up parts on many bikes. A suzuki rg500 fork on a yamaha sr500 single, a gsxr 750 fork on my ex500 race bike, and cbr600 f2 fork on an rz350. It can be done, levels of difficulty vary. The gsxr fork is bolt on the ex, only have to change the steering head bearing to accomodate the larger diamer steering stem. the rg fork had a upper triple clamp custom made.

I have a set of GSXR forks here that I have been playing with (1998 I think) the length is not the same but the dia is correct. I mean to try to swap the caliper and axle mounts but I have just not gotten there yet (too busy).

People are doing it on monsters all the time. Issues are in the brakes (new calipers and rotors I think)

I put forks/brakes from an 04 gsxr 1000 on my S2R 800 monster.
a gixxer axle works fine with the stock wheel. you need new axle spacers, rotor spacers, and caliper spacers (if you plan to use 320 rotors)

I once installed a complete set of GSXR forks, wheel, brakes & triples on a 900SS with bearing & race changes. If I remember correctly there was a steering head height issue also, but I think we made a spacer and all was well.
Went from total crap to fully adjustable Showa in minutes.
