Question 2001 750 SS: Removing the Internals on the Tank

Hi everyone. I am a new member and am enjoying reading the posts and helpful hints here. The expertise comes in handy. I am looking for some help from anyone who has ever had to do this. I got a new tank to replace my damaged one from a crash, and need to swap all the tank parts from the old to the new. I unscrewed the hex heads to get the lock plug piece off, and then the very small hex screws (that go horizontal into the groove around the lower lip on the tank) that hold the plug ring in place. I have all the visible screws out, but the unit still won't budge. I don't want to force it out and all the schematics show that it should just come out. Some kind of super sealant holding it in place that I then just need to muscle out, or am I missing something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to assume that my '95 900ss is the same as yours. Having said that - the collar is a b!tch to remove. I have used a 1"x1"x12" piece of wood and leverage it out GENTLY by moving the piece of wood around and give it a tap with the palm of your hand - no hammers here.

There's a O-ring that goes around the collar that fits inside a groove and it's tight. It sounds like you have completely removed the grub screws but if not, you should do that.

When you put it back together, you'll have fun keeping the rubber seal that fits around the edge of the collar and the tank in place....

It's a B-I-T-C-H to remove but it can be done....start by getting a little WD40 down under the outer rubber seal.... It takes some force thats for sure, you will need to grab it with your fingers and pull straight out, once it starts to free up try a little more WD40 around the seal. If you have a new lip seal/gasket then as Chazz67 said you may be able to pry it out with a screw driver, using a flat pices of wood to protect the tank..... once again you think getting it out is fun wait till you put it back in No worry though, it can be done patients is the key.....Take it from me once your in there it's cheap insurace to replace you filter and rubber hoses so you don't have to do this all over again 6 months down the road....

Thumbs up

Much appreciated on the info. It came in very handy, even though the WD 40 was nowhere to be found. It was definitely a pain to get out, but once I got enough leverage it came right out. The hard part was trying to get the internal unit with the filter pushed back in place, as I was afraid of breaking the tabs that hold it in. I ran out of sunlight before I could get the collar pushed back in (shop still needs the electrical done) so I hope it's not too bad going back in. Thanks a bunch.

Then way the rubber ring goes back on is so goofy you won't believe it is right. Remember, once you get the thing installed the top surface of the ring will be visible all around the circumference of the filler assembly on top of the tank. If I remember, you have to stretch the ring a bit to get it into position.
