Default storing an empty gas tank...tips ??

Going to be servicing my 900 ss this winter...im going to need to store the gas tank empty for an extended period. Are there any tricks to keep the inside from rusting ?? I was going to spray a ton of WD-40 in there and then swirl it around to coat the inside.....
Does anyone have any tips or tricks on keeping the rust away ??

Thanks !!

I finished coating the inside of my tank last month with Kreem, had rust from the previous owner, and I noticed that the Tank Prep B (final rinse and water remover ) did a great job of rinsing the tank and then evaprorating to where the tank was bone dry inside. The tank is now sitting on a shelf waiting for next spring. I check it every week and haven't noticed any rust re-developing...

I'm not sure this would work for your application but I'd have to think it would be better the WD-40. I would think the WD-40 would attract dirt and rinsing out next spring might prove to be a challenge.

Your other option would be to store the tank full of gas.

If you don't fill it with gas, I would open up the tank as much as possible, take off the tank lid and remove the fuel level sensor from the bottom.

Store it full of fuel! I fill up after every ride too. so far so good. the bike sits on the street, all weathers (even -18 berlin winter) and no rust in 6 years.

Store it with a full tank of gas treated with a gas stabiliser (i.e. Stabil or something similar). No rust and it will start right up in the spring. Oh yeah and take your battery out and keep it charged and not frozen.

I would not take the chance if you have to store it empty. Order a POR-15 motorcycle kit and coat the inside of the tank while you have it empty and off the bike. For 40$ (i think) and a weekend of easy work, you will never have to worry about rust in the tank again. It is also a good time to change the filter and hoses inside the tank. Which should be done on a regular basis.

Just fill it up.

Then when ready to ride again, empty the fuel into your lawn mower fuel can ...

when i store my bikes over winter i fill them full of gas with stabilizer- don't fill tank with gas then just pour stabil in -you need to stir /shake it to mix gas and stabil thoroughly. When I store a tank off the bike or for an extended time I empty all the gas and put a pint of good 2-stroke oil in it and make sure the whole inside is coated and roll the oil around at least ounce a year. When i start running it i just drain the oil out and don't flush it because the little bit of 2-stroke oil left in the tank won't leave any carbon or residue on the plugs , valves combustion chamber.
