Default 2002 900SS problem

The bike is a 2002 900SS with 2600 miles on the clock. It has DP exhaust and chip, but I don't think it's related to this.

So this is the situation: The bike starts and runs beautifully when cold. When the bike reaches normal operating temperatures it starts to act up. At first it will act like the bike is being switched off for a second, and then back on. This will last for about 30 seconds, at which point the bike will go completely dead, and I will be stuck by the side of the road for 20-30 minutes while the bike cools. After that it starts up and will repeat what just happened after about 5 minutes.

Whe the bike starts acting up it is a very violent thing, and it is literally like the key is being switched off and on.

When the bike is dead there is no spark at either plug.

Since there are 2 coils, I doubt they would both fail at the same time. What come before the coils in the ignition chain?

Any ideas?

Default Pickup on flywheel....nope

My guess is the ECU. There is little in this ignition system, pickup, ECU, coils.

Default When you say ECU

Are you talking about the box I replaced with the DP pipes? Or is there another ECU?

Default Yes

I did not know you put on DP pipes or replaced the box, but it is under the tank near the battery.

Just fix a similar problem to yours. Bike would start fine (most of the time) then as it warmed up it would start to miss fire and cough. Then for no particular reason the bike would then run fine. When it had starting problems it would start with a cloud of black smoke (engine flooded I guess)

The problem in my case was a buggered/green/fury TPS and temp sensor. The temp sensor was sending error messages and the TPS would go from closed to full open with the smallest movement of the throttle.

Have a look/test your TPS and temp sensor. IMO I would think if the ECU was stuffed the bike wouldn't run

Default 2002 900SS problem

Could be a mis-mapped ECU. Check for a new Ducati lable over an old Ducati label. Ducati apparently took a bunch of stock ECU's and had them reflashed with DP maps - but the operator loading the maps loaded the wrong maps! The part numbers on the ECU's are correct, but the maps are not! Happened to a bunch of ECU's (per BCM). This happened sometime early to mid 2005 I believe. Yours could be one of the batches. They'll test it and determine its for a monster, or ST2, or 99 900SS or some other bike that uses that configuration ECU, then order up a new one if that's the issue.

A quick test would be to re-install your stock ECU - the bike should run fine hot or cold, even with the aftermarket pipes and open airbox. It'll run lean of course, but you'll at least see if the problem persists. If it does then you'll know to check the sensors (ignition pickup, oil temp, air temp, tps, and coils. - check your spark plug wires and spark plugs too) and that the problem is not related to the ECU. Also, check all connections and grounds just to be sure - and all fuses, ignition etc.

If you have a technoresearch or Mathis tool you'll be able to test the coils and many other sensors. It may also help if you have a buddy or a shop that can swap out some known good used sensors for you to put in place to try - saves a lot of time and $.
