Default Opinons on the buying a new 1999 900SS

Hi all, a local dealer has 2 1999 900SS half fairings for 8K each, I love the look of the half fairing but Im leary to jump on something like this. Does this model year have any reliability issues? Does 8k sound a bit high for a bike that is almost 7 years old, even though its new?

Of course the price is high a seven year old bike is worth probably $3000-3500. Just because the dealer is an idiot and knows nothing about marketing and sales he expects you to get sucker in because of his ineptness? Why the hell does he still have new bikes that are seven years old? Hell for $8000 you could get a new 800SS. Don't do it you'll be losing your shirt.

Default Great bike!!

The 900SS is a great bike - I have a 1999 with 35K miles and NO reliability issues in all that time.
Not sure if I'd pay the asking price, but remember it IS a new bike... sort of. It's not like you're paying 8K for a 7 year old used bike with 30K miles on it - it's zero mileage. However, if you do make him an offer be sure to get the belts changed before you even start it up.

FWIW, I seem to remember I paid less than $9k for mine. I bought in summer of 2000, new off the floor. Seems to me $8k for one now is rather high.

It sounds like the price is why he still has them 7 years later. If he keeps them another 20 years it'll be a bargain! I'd buy a brand new SL for the original sticker!

just for reference, i paid 9000 for my 03 1000ss. you can get a 1000 for not much more than those 7 year old 900's and it is a much better bike. what about a warranty? no way i bet.

I bought a 2000, yellow 1/2 faired 900SS last Summer; $5k, plus my old '87 Paso. Ballpark, around $8k in value I guess. I'm extremely happy with it because it's EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED! I didn't want the new 800.
I also got the full 2 year, unlimited warranty. I called Ducati USA to make sure.
Buy what you want to ride,
gregc

It books for $5Kish.. so you should be able to work from there.. I would not pay $8,000 my self, but I just bought a '00 900 Halfy in red for under $4,500 with 9,000 miles and fresh belts/tuneup/service. LOVE IT.

I have had a hard time finding the half fairings which is what I really want. 8k sounds way too much from the dealer, they won't bidge on the price, 2 year warranty, still in the crate, purchased from a dealer that went under.

I wonder what the oil in the crankcase looks like? I also wonder if they have ever had fuel in them, or I mean varnish!

If they haven't been ran I wonder if the seals have bonded to their shafts, etc.
I think I'd buy new.
Don't get me wrong they might be OK, but one has to ask oneself just how much life is left in the rubber parts that have been sitting for over seven years without having oil splashed on them.
If your going to ride the bike, get a fresh one!
If your going to make a museum piece out of the bike, I'd say go for it.

Default I hope you're kidding...

Paid under $9k for my 2001 900ss, full fairing, brand new and that was over three years ago. If you're wedded to a half faired bike, I'm sure there at least several half fairing owners here who would swap for the full fairings (like saying I'll give you $1 for those three quarters IMHO).

Besides the oil, still in crate means that belts and tires are no good either. Will have to be changed before ridden.

Do yourself a favor, look around and get last year's 1000DS or 800SS model and mod as desired. I'm sure you'll be far happier...not to mention better swingarm, wheels, etc. on '01 and later bikes.

Default What to do, what to do?

He is at least giving you a 2 year warrenty, so if there are any problems from it sitting, you would/should be covered... IF you got new belts and tires included at that price, and IF you just have to have THAT bike, then It's not a bad deal, just not a great deal. Nothing, or anything, is worth more or less than YOU are willing to pay.

BUT.. if it's just that you think half fairings are the hawtness.. and they are BTW, then I will tell you this, 1 of my ridding buds has a 2005 800SS, and we have looked it over, would take 10 minutes to swap out the fairings from my 2000 to his 2005.
If it were me.. at that price I would get a NEW 800, or pony up to the 1000DS 'cause of the way better suspension/bit more power, and then just round up some half fairings... ebay is your friend... and your savings accounts nightmare...lol
