Default Ducati 900SS -1000DS "SS " questions

Hello all .

I see the 2002 900SS used a 5.5 inch rear wheel with a 170/17 tire yet the 2003 and up 1000DS " SS " uses a 180/17 tire .

Is the swingarm different between the two bikes or will the 2002 900SS take a 180 rear tire or does the 2003 and up 1000SS use a wider wheel than 5.5 ?

Also , is there an internal dimension/size difference between the two bikes exhaust header and lastly , will a 2003 and up 1000DS engine fit and work in a 2002 900SS frame along with it's throttle body and electronics ?

I ask because I have found a great deal on a 2002 900S and would like to change it a bit if I buy it

Thanks in advance for any info you can give

My '97SL has a 5.5 rim and was originally wearing a 170 section rear. Sticking a 180 presented no clearence problems at all, and i'm sure that if a 180 fits onto a '97, then it will go on to a ie. Oddly there seems to be no difference with the tyre widths ... (from Dunlop 207 170 to a Metz racetec 180).

I would think a 180/55 will work, but you may or may not have some clearance issues with the rear hugger depending on tire manufacturer. A 170 and a 180 will normally fit a 5.5 rear rim.

While the ID of the headers may be the same between 900 and 1000 engines, note that the headers on the 1000DS are different to accomodate the heads on the 1000 engine which were re-designed from the 900. So, I doubt the hearders would be a simple bolt on.

I have a 180/55 on my 01 SS. No clearance problems. Tire brands differ though. I have been running Metzler Sportec M1s. They are pretty narrow for a 180 compared to Michelin and Dunlop 180s I've looked at. My 180 looks about the same size as the Michelin 170 that came on the bike. Perelli seems to have the same profile as the Metzler.

Thanks for the replies . I have decided to buy the Senna and tuck it away so to speak and continue my search for the right 2003 and up 1000DS to use as a rider , therapy and all that .

I'd apreciate a heads up if anyone runs across a low mile prisitine 1000DS or even a new old stock unit that a dealer has great pricing on .
