I wondered the same thing until I got my 749R set to work with a regular long-stroke shock. It's the same setup used in AMA/FX and WSS

Hey Bella, could you go into more detail on that?

The O.P. surely was about the 916 series bike, w/ mag swingarm. However, the xx9 bikes have a very similar setup.

I bought a 749R that had it's OEM short-stroke shock replaced with a Ohlins DU301, standard out-of-the-box triple-adjustable shock for a regular 'ol 999. It has a standard 71mm stroke to work with the standard progressive link. Honestly, it worked like poo. Mostly because the spring was way soft.

I called just about every big name in the business about this shock with the 749R linear link combo. The two that were the most knowlegable were Ducshop and Matt Carr of Ducati Indianapolis. Ducshop, in particular, was very good about going into what mods are done to the shock. Mine, in particular was revalved to Doug Chandler's spec for AMA/FX, which uses a MX2 motocross piston in it with the appropriate valving to suit. The longer stroke is better suited for bumpy tracks here in the US.

These shocks can be revalved and configured in just about any way; you just have to ensure who does it knows what they're doing or at least has the proper spec card.

I recently did the same change from the stock DU3240 shock and the DU3011 w/Chandler kit (DucShop).

Its really screwed up my riding style because the rear feels more linear and has WAY more travel then the stock shock. The biggest difference between the two shocks is the subtleness of the DU3011, even though it still has a stiff spring, the bumps don't effect me anymore. Also, sliding the bike around is much more controllable (duh) because of how much softer it feels. In the one race weekend I've had on the DU3011, I've really had to set the bike up differently from tire pressures to preload (I can finally get decent sag). I'm not "in love" with the shock yet, but I can see the potential and with 2 more weekends of setup, it should work well.

Anyhow, the longer wheel base of the extended swing arm, the linear shock link and the shock to match, those should all substantially help the rear grip of the bike, especially mid corner and exiting, where the 848/1098 series has issues in stock configuration.
