Default help needed: rear brake caliper bracket

I'm trying to replace the rear brake caliper mounting bracket on my 916. The problem is I can not get the large retaining circlip back on - this holds the bracket in place and fits in a little groove when installed. It's under a lot of tension when installed, and I can not get it back into the groove. It has a hole at each end that I think are meant to take needle nose pliers or some such to spread apart, but I still can't get it to spread enough to re-install. Does anyone know a technique (or special tool?) will work? Tried heating the circlip in boiling water but no luck with that either. Anyone?

Thanks.

just get a Seegerring tool for external rings.
perferably a version that fits the size of the ring.
(Large type) as they come in different sizes.

thanks EO, I've never even heard of that. I didn't feel quite so bad when the guy in the tool section at Sears hadn't either! Is this the same things as snap-ring pliers?
