Default what Flywheel?

Hello!

I've decided to try a light weight flywheel on my 998 track bike.

I've looked at Motowheels' which is from Nichols and also Yoyodyne's version.

Which one should I choose? Does it matter? Is lighter better or is too light bad?

Any input appreciated.

cheers!

It's a personal preference thing.

I have a stock 998 and I woulnd't put a light flywheel in it for the track. My 996 has light everything and it's a little bit difficult to keep the engine spinning, although you can tell it's easier to pull side to side.

Nichols tends to make really good stuff.

That's interesting to hear!
I'll probably end up getting the lighter Nichols wheel just to try to see if I like it.
Since the stock 998 doesn't have the light crank, or anything light, it might work just fine.
I also have the surflex slipper and light weight basket which helps too.

I've also been looking at swapping the engine for a late 999 instead of upgrading the stock one with hot cams etc. But that will be a later mission.

I don't know about light baskets. They spin opposite the crank. I think it's not a bad idea in general to take weight off the engine, but as far as affecting the gyroscopic effect, I'm just not sure about that.

As for cams, I keep an eye out for S cams or just the later 999 ones. Apparently they are drop in replacements. You'd want to get a new map on it for them though. Seems like fun. Although the stock bike seems plenty fast enough to do squid sniping. If you get a half talented one on a 600 though it makes life difficult.

I've got Nichols flywheels on both my SPS and my wife's monster and really like them... One plus about their units is they will take them back if you are not satisfied. Get the flywheel nuts also if you end up pulling the trigger.

Something to remember is the crank in the 998 has a much shorter stroke than the 996. Accordingly the stock 998 flywheel is a tad heftier. If Nicholds uses the same flywheel, the 998 just might have a tad more stalling issues. Just bump the idle a bit. On the same note it should spin up quite nicely......

Just to follow up here... I ended up installing Nichols fly wheel on the 998 and like the new bike. I had to change the slipper clutch a bit to compensate for the changed engine breaking.
It's also a bit different doing race starts, but other than that, I won't go back.

cheers guys!
