22 years on the street with full gear ALWAYS!
i have ridden all types about and even to the store i suit up
crashed and totaled 2 Ninjas back in the day, one high side and one low side and i walked away from both without a scratch
the highside was 100 MPH and the lowside was 65ish
i know of people who were in traffic and at a light stopped and a lady bumped them sideways and crushed their ankle at a standstill, botts would have saved that prolly. accidents don't care if you are only going to the store

Funny you mentioned this, but thats what I was thinking after hearing and seeing videos of the Dragon the last 3 or 4 years. Then you see the fatal head on motorcycle accident on U-tube where the ding dong misses two turns, the second one he goes over and kills either himself or the poor oncoming rider. Getting hit head on by a squid, thats the truth. Saw quite a few of them out today since the weather is getting hotter. One guy in a tight tank top, stupid mohawk thing on his helmet and shorts. He looked gay. When they crash and get ripped to the bone I kind of chukkle.

it would be absolutely lovely doing electronics labs wearing 5 grand worth of safety equipment and preaching atgatt at everyone who walks past me... i'd be held in the highest regard because i'm so smart.
be realistic here, that's all i'm getting at.
|
Your taking this personally..
Dont. It wasnīt meant to shame or to preach "the word of ATGATT". You asked a question/made an assumption and i answered and stating my reasons for going ATGATT.
As you can see above you post, there are fundemental diffrences in how we in Europe see motorcycling. You say "Be realistic" and I AM being.. You extremly seldom see riders in Sweden not wearing full leathers or full goretex gear. The same is true for most parts of Europe..
Iīm not saying your not wearing enough protection, because that is for YOU to decide. All Iīm saying is that "going down" is something i always think about when i decide what gear to ride in. Having gone down at 15 mph aswell as 100 mph, i can say that in both cases the full leathers saved by behind from both pain and rashes.. I probably would have survived both wearing only a t-shirt and jeans, but it would have been painful. Now i just hoped up and shook my head in disgust at my own stupidity.
//amullo
sorry if i insulted you earlier, didnīt mean too.

Bottom line: We can all wear whatever we wish when we ride, as long as it complies with local laws.
The least amount of safety gear I will wear on the street is jeans, in addition to a helmet, leather jacket, gloves, and boots. I have been involved in too many incidents both on the street and at the track (should have been killed at least once, possibly twice) to do otherwise. I have always walked away with bruises and at most, a small cut inside mouth from hitting the inside of my helmet. Thank you God.
There have been times during hot summer days when I have been absolutely miserable on the 998R, because of the clothing and the heat radiating from the bike while at a light. When I think about complaining, I remind myself that flying through the air just before impact is not the time to wish I had my boots on, etc.

I started riding in Italy, at the time customary riding gear was jeans, 'tennis shoes', t-shirt, shades and possibly a thin wind-jacket, helmets were not compulsory and many didn't bother especially in hot city-centre traffic.
Nowadays I am mostly ATGATT (though not always). I have crashed both with and without gear and know which is preferable....

You guys sound ridiculous, calling this lucky man an ass because of his shoes.
I bet if you met the guy you wouldn't say that, and you know what sometimes there are reasons for he may not be wearing boots.
I once hit the dragon with tennis shoes on my 1098, I could have worn boots, but I was riding in the middle of a hot a sticky summer day for 600 miles to see some old friends, and I just happened to go through the gap via a spur of the moment lucky decision to take what was actually the wrong road.

Yes and we've seen Amy on the back of that 1098 with no protective clothing on too!! She won't be nearly so cute if she hits the pavement and is all scar tissue. Shame on you for letting her ride that way!!

I'm still baffled by the fact that you're legally allowed to ride a motorbike in parts of the US without wearing a helmet. I believe sunglasses are mandatory but no helmet. That is CRAZY shit!!!
I guess it's up to each and everyone to decide what to wear as long as you're not braking local laws but personally, like amullo, I'd never go for a ride without wearing full protective clothing.
Granted, Scandinavia isn't the warmest part of the world so it may be less uncomfortable wearing full gear in Sweden compared to Texas but then again you can always choose not to ride and take the car instead.
I bet you wish you did when you're lying in a hospital bed receiving morphine while a team of doctors prepare to transfer skin from the few remaining healthy portions of your body to cover the badly rashed ones...

The Swedish goverment foots the bill for medical/hospitals and all other costs when it comes to rehab, sick pay and possibly work re-education. The insurance companys foot the bill when it comes to the bike, and thatīs it.
Iīd want MY taxmoney to be spent on schools and other municipal stuff, not on some guy who figured it was "His right" to go blasting around without proper protection.
Dont get me wrong.. Do whatever you like, just donīt expect me to pay for it with my taxes when you get hurt. Which is what i do here in Sweden.. Which is the reason that helmets are obligatory...
Besides.. a funeral costs less then rehab.
