Default Enhancing the SPS but keeping it modular

So, I've been trying to stay calm and keep my money together by not investing into my 955 SPS. A hard task as many of you may know.

I've been lurking around ebay for the past two weeks doing some so called inspirational shopping (see if anything nice is offered). I found several parts that would fit my bike, but - I stood away from buying any of them. I'll tell you why.

I know that I want to keep the SPS as the base for future mods. The newer bikes don't interest me much. I think if I ever wanted more power, I'd stick a 1098 engine in it. And this is where it comes down to: what is left to buy that you don't throw away if you do the 1098 upgrade?
I already have the magnesium wheels I always wanted. I got the Öhlins suspension I always wanted. I got the 2000 SPS frame and 27mm triples... So... Help me thinking. Magnesium swingarm? Big fuel tank? Large airbox with big air runners? Higher clip ons?

It's a road bike that I will rarely use for racing.
What would you recommend to pimp the bike?

The major performance upgrades have already been done. I'd suggest all carbon bodywork and a custom paint job.

if you threw a 1098 engine in that you would have all the problems the race bikes had from the power. proper setup motor would be fine i think

Some things on my want list if you don't already have them...
Nice Rearsets
Galfer Rotors
Want to do a custom monocoque rear seat/fairing (really wishful)
Speedcell battery
Custom levers possibly like piazzo.
And the list goes on!

I have a rashed 998R right hand fairing and a Sebimoto cf left hand race fairing with an MS production oil pan, but I´ll keep that for the track. Bought a set of glass fibre replacement fairings and that stuff is no heavier than the cf bodywork.

Custom paint... I already finished that in photoshop. I´ll paint it myself, because nice paint isn´t gonna make the bike better

You mean no grip and such? I´d need the longer swingarm then I´d guess. Good call. But the 1098 engine project is far down the road. I won´t do it soon. My engine is gonna have something in the 130s, it´s a 955 SPS. Not ready yet... maybe next week. Anything else you want to add to the list in regards to parts?

Cool list I already have Ducati Performance rearsets. More for usability then for bling. Bought it off a forum member here or at .MS, can´t remember. Rotors? No - already have Brembo, which are good. Speedcell, yeah, maybe when the current one is dead! Good idea. As for custom levers, naaaa, don´t need that. I want to make the bike better not add more useless stuff

I received some pictures from Matt Smith (duc572), who was kind enough to help me out with the ignition module mounting problem I described in another thread. He has a Speedcell fuel tank. What a cool thing that is. I tend to race endurance and am now scratching my head about getting a 21l Corse fuel tank - either original or FuelCell. 1300US$ though... Anyone know of any used ones?

Thanks for all the replies and keep them coming!

The longer magnesium swngarm is a great addition for track use.

This is easy. Call Motowheels, give them credit card. Problem solved.

I see... I misinterpreted your use of "pimping out the bike". That was definitely my wish list of nice parts to make the bike look better. It seems that I am like you, my performance upgrades always get pushed to the front of the line.

If you're only looking for 130's power, I'd just get a 996 engine.

I'm at 130hp right now (something like 86 ft*lb of torque from memory) with a slightly hot rodded 996 (STrada cams & stock valves presently). I've got to advance the inlet cams a touch, that'll probably give ~2-3 hp over where I am now.

Once I get off my ass, do cams and profile bore the TB's I'd expect to pick up another ~7hp. Big airbox/runners would be very nice too.

If the 1098 engine is the goal in the end (or at least more power in the end), I would stick with longer swing arm that was mentioned and the best brake setup you can get ..Brembo RCS Adjustable Radial Master and so on.

At least those things will be useful now and with the 1098 engine. A side effect is the "bling" factor that stuff adds even if that was not intended

I can't see your money not being well spent (invested) in those areas.

Mike

Yeah, mag swingarm, works best with the 27mm tripples.
Carbon tank,
Carbon bodywork.
Carbon large AB
Carbon underseat breather box.
More carbon, baby!!
Heck, it's not my money....I just bought a 999R for $9500 and solved my problem!!!
Glad to see you worked out the ign mod mounting problem.

Hi Ben,
Gonna tell you what i have done with this question.
Started out in a similar position, no interest in anything newer than a 998:
So, what to do?

Desided to build a "one of a kind 998"

Got my 998 Biposto Frame sprayed in corse red.
Found a 996R Testastretta Engine and rebuild it up from zero.
balanced crank, lightend everything inside, light gearshaft (schaltwalze) and RS shift forks. Got some already tuned heads from Joerg and let Christian Sakowitz do his work on them. Bigger valves, finetuned inlet area, valveseats worked by and some Pistal High Comp. Pistons.

Put it all together and bolt on a 998RS Water- and Oil Radiator, 998RS Engine breather box, Termi 60mm Titan factory exhaust system, milled PVM Brake and Clutch Masters,Translogic Dashboard, Magnesium swingarm, Racing rear axle with full floating 200mm Brake Disk and a milled 4 P caliper, Milled Brembo Radial Front calipers, Magnesium 10 spoke Marchesinis, 998RS Ohlins shock, Ohlins Desmosedici Fork, Magnesium Triples, 23,4L WSBK F01 Carbontank, Moto Corse Footrests and Sead Pad, EVR Airbox, 58mm Injection, Carbonfibre bodywork with Large Air Runners, closed loop Engine management by a Motty AFR Tuner and LC1 Lambda controler made by Innovativ Motorsports supplied from mad-d.ch. And tons of Titan screws, bolts & nuts.

At last it took two years overall to source all parts and put it all together.
And now there is no need for a 1098 engine or anything with more HP.

Its light, its fast and it handels and drives like a bicycle on steroids.

So, thats what I have done.
God luck on your SPS Build

cheers
Chris

PS: Maybe a "simple" carbontank and 996rs front fairing stay is a good point to start with. mailed you some pics earlier.
