Question 998 <-> 999s cams?

Hello!

I have a '02 998 US that I'm riding on the track only. The engine is more or less stock except for a full 50mm exhaust and a power commander.
I've done suspension and wheel upgrades already, a slipper too.

It has the 'lazy' cams and the non deep sump engine.

Is it possible to install the 'hot' cams from a 999s into this engine?

The part numbers of the cams I'm looking at are:
14820792B / 14820801B / 14820782B / 14820811B

Is it plug and play or does it require any other parts?

cheers!!

It sure is plug and play, need to check the valve clearances, but to me swapping cams in ducatis, it wont need much, they are consistent as far as I know. I have two swaps from 999 to 999s cams, no probs. 998 and 999 is the exact same engine so they will interact.

Default cam switch

What kind of gains can one expect from swapping the cams?

Should be roughly 10-15 HP. The base engines in the 998 and 999 will make roughly 128-130 HP (engine) and the 998S/999S will make roughly 145.

+1 especially if you have a larger header pipe, the cams dont gain you much without a pipe and visa versa.

Look at ebay Baldy, there is a set or two right now.

I think 400 for a complete set intake and exhaust is what I saw yesterday. Maybe a bit more.

$400 is what I paid for a set of s heads ,which in the 749 had bigger valves as well . I'm now thinking I should have gone for 999 heads which would have had even larger valves .

Have you tried the 749s heads on a stock 999 bottom end? I have one put together but have not run it yet. I am thinking it will be about mid 130's with a nice pipe and tune and stock pistons. No porting or anything, just stock 749s heads at 1mm squish above a stock 999 piston and bottom end.

IMHO no matter what the HP, the ti keepers give me comfort.

That should have some good compression with its tiny combustion chamber Will be interesting

Thanks for all the replies.

It sound like you gain a lot of power with this simple mod, so I think it's worth doing.

Would the maintenance schedule of the 999s cams be a lot different from the std cams?

cheers

Thanks Ben. I think I was too late to see it, although I saw some 998S cams which are probably US spec. Haven;t cross-referenced the part numbers , so if they are the UK spec, then they'd be a steal.

Anytime dude.

Drop chris steedman a PM. Last time I asked, he could get them for a reasonable price.

There were no true S camed 998's in the U.S. but we did get them in the 999S and later standard 999's. We have a used set of the 999S cams which are a drop in for any 998/999.
