Default 748R clutch basket exchange

I’m planning for the winter the exchange of the original 748R basket for one in alloy.

This will be a little long and the English might not be the best so be gentle with me J

I ask for help on if is needed any special tools, parts or tricks that should know.

I have:

- New alloy basket
- New alloy pressure plate
- A new spider spring
- New alloy clutch disks

I’m going to buy:

- New stainless springs
- New stainless bolts for the posts. What is the size of the bolt? I want to buy a bolt with torx head! I think they are better than the allen. Anyone saw them in the BMW bikes!
- New alloy caps for the springs

This procedure I think will be this:

- Take the cover off
- Take the bolts out
- Take springs off
- Get the pressure plate with the rod

First question – How do I get out the rod from the pressure plate? Do I need a special tool?

- Put the rod in the new pressure plate
- Take out the clutch disks – See the order of the disks, put a strap around the disks
- Put the bike in first gear, and ask for someone to hold the brake. (I will do a tool with the old disks)
- Take the big nut that holds the hub.

Second question – What is the size of this nut? I will use electric impact driver I need to see if I have the socket for it.

- Take the hub out.
- Take the flange out
- Get out the 8 screws that hold the basket in place.

Third question – What is the size of these bolts? I want replace this for the same bolt in AISI 316.

I think that is all in the disassembly.

The assembly will be the opposite.

Some thoughts:

- In which bolts should I use threadlocker and what strength to use?
- Will I have problems with the alloy/stainless steel interaction.
- Can I use copper paste to lubricate the ramps or the moly paste is best?
- What torques should I know?
- On the exploded view of the manual on the assembly of the clutch disks shows first two plain disks is this the right way?

These are the questions that I have for now.

I will take some pictures of the procedure.

Thank you for your time

Pedro

Good post man! I wish all of us here would do it this way.

First question – How do I get out the rod from the pressure plate? Do I need a special tool?

***just tap it with a hammer and some flat surfaced bolt.

Second question – What is the size of this nut? I will use electric impact driver I need to see if I have the socket for it.

***I think it is a 32mm one. Or was it a 28? Something that I have in my toolbox.

- In which bolts should I use threadlocker and what strength to use?
*** I used red loctite (bottle is red, fluid is green I think). I use it on the ones that hold the basket. That´s it.

- Will I have problems with the alloy/stainless steel interaction.
*** Well steel is harder than aluminum. Alu plates with alu discs would be better.

- Can I use copper paste to lubricate the ramps or the moly paste is best?
*** copper paste is good, but I don´t think you need a lot of that. If any. You can run it dry as well.

- What torques should I know?
* The big nut that´s on the crankshaft is 180nm. The inner bolts... hmmm cant remember. Something around 60? Don´t have my workshop manual here now. Sorry.

- On the exploded view of the manual on the assembly of the clutch disks shows first two plain disks is this the right way?
***No, the stack for the slippers are different. First driving plate because it´s thicker. Then driven plate, driving plate, spring plate, mix mix mix, spring plate, mix mix and end with driven plates.

Finally i have the 748R manual.

Ducati recommends Loctite 510 for the bolts holding the basket and Loctite 128455 for the hub nut.

http://tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/510-EN.PDF

http://www.loctite.tv/template/ying/.../128455-EN.PDF

What type is normally used?

Thank you

Pedro
