Well I just smoked a cigar (really).
Because I think I fuggin' GOT IT!!
Looks like the wiring b/t the regulator/rectifier and the battery was dodgy.
Used to have ~12V at idle and would decrease until the engine would peter out. Now solid 14V and idles ok (needs some tweaking, but that's another matter).
Should I hope for more power now that the stupid thing will have a full 14V?
