Default Taper bearing steering head upgrade?

Has anyone done this? Is it really as simple as a straight swap with the OEM bearings?

I know of a person who has done this swap and it was a breeze. Have fun though with the bottom race! It's the same with the OEM's.

You are going to gain some friction when compared to the ball bearings. Also you can over tighten the triple clamp nut with less risk of buggering something up before you stop tightening things. With the roller setup you'll have more surface area making contact. If your shock loading the stem (Doing Wheelies) these bearings are for you! I'll stick with the balls as hey seem to do the job well enough for me. I replaced mine at 11,000 miles and found no wear when I installed a new adjustable triple clamp.

we fit taper bearings to lots of the 916, st, late m series bikes. mainly st2/4/4s, which are really hard on the steering head bearings.

interestingly, we've changed maybe 5 or less sets of steering head bearings in bikes with the alloy adjustable insert since '94. but lots in the non adjustable steering head frames with identical bearings - cheap 748, st, monster. i did a 749 with 20,000km this week. that insert really seems to make a difference.

Brad, I noticed that too, I was thinking the seals in the "Good" 748/916 fits better? Perhaps the aluminum absorbs shock more. The STs seem to rust out the bearings.
