Default My 998 odometer is 15% too optimistic when compared to both my cars

I have compared the odometer (trip meter) reading from the 998 and both my cars. the cars are within .2 miles of eachother over a 11.5 mile commute..while the 998 reads almost 2.0 miles too much.
IF that IS true..the 7108 miles on my 998 are really 6041 miles..
Guess that explains why I have been lucky and the belts didnt break..

FYI, as of 25 days ago, I am no longer riding the bike .. waiting to have the belts replaced...

I believe this is fairly common with motorcycles. Some months back, Motorcycle Consumer News did an article on this same thing. If I had to guess, your speedometer will be off by the same amount.

I am guessing the odometer is off because the speedo is off..i-e hand in hand..right?

Your belts did not break because they are designed to last 12k miles. Valve adjustments are on the 6k interval.

That is my understanding. If it's important enough to you, I can dig thru my old MCNs and find the article.

I installed a bicycle PC on my 748R, article posted here somewhere. The tyre diameter was measured to the mm by hand, not by the circumference formula. My speedo reads (in Km/h) vs. the PC:

72 vs. 60 i.e 20%
92 vs 80 i.e 15%
126 vs 110 i.e 14.5%.

From what I recall, not quite a linear 15%, but def reading over by approx 10-15%. I can now add on 10% to the digital speedo for highway riding, some 25% over the original speedo without fear of being nabbed (touch wood).

YMMV
