Default Need advice on a used 916

A friend of a friend is sell a '95 916. He has had it since new and it was one of the first 916's in the midwest. This person takes great care of his stable of bikes. This bike was a street bike for only a year or two then raced, but not hardcore. He is bringing the bike back to a street bike with a few things left from his race upgrades.

I am very interested in this bike. What should I look out for and what would be a good price?!

here's some info that maybe useful for you...

http://www.ducatitech.com/4v/maint/index.html

since it's a 95, it maybe safe from rocker failure but best to check to be sure. there is also a problem with the 2-phase charging system frying certain components/harness on the bike. other 916 owners, may want to chime in since i own a 2000 748. they may have made some refinements before then.

I had the same question before getting my 748. Click the link to see the thread.

916-what should I look out for?

Hope it helps and good luck.

pricing will range all over the place between $4k-7k depending on condition and miles. it really depends. probably the best time of year to buy one is now since a new model is coming out and winter.

I know he has taken great care of it and he replacing a lot of parts to make it as perfect as you could get... but it has been raced, which means at some point has been dumped!

The price is right in the middle of what you are saying!?

I've seen well sorted 05 916s go for as high as 8K. As Cheech alluded to, the 95 escaped the rocker demons and was the first of the celebrated body style to come over here. As he further stated, the electricals need upgrading, the cush drive bolts can back out and the flywheel nut can too. Personally, the only issue I've had on my 916 was the rectifier going out. Last valve inspect at 6K miles was all valves were in spec with no sign of rocker wear. On the other hand, a buddy of mine with a 98 916 has had the rockers go south and the cush drive bolts back out alongwith a couple other issues.

Ducatis were born to be raced, so buying a former racer that hasn't been thrown around is OK as long as the mechanicals check out.
