Just curious...
I'd be miffed...especially if I had just spent $20K + on a 999R and now this comes out for much cheaper and it's that much better.

I personally wouldn't be bummed, the 999 looks a lot better. It's not like anybody but a select few here can actually use the extra power and better components. I'm trying to sell of some bikes to get a new 999 right now.

Default Not Really that mad.....

I think if I paid sticker for my 999, I'd be furious. Fortunately, I bought a 2005 leftover and paid about what the 1098 will be. Of course, it also makes me wonder how low I could've gotten a 1098 for had I waited . Thanks for pointing that out Just think, if I had waited, I'd have not gone thru the "Holy Crap, S8S is going out of business, am I getting my stuff?" panic I had for a couple of weeks.

Truly though, I'm happy with my 999 and the looks and if I decide to buy another Ducati in the future, it may just be the 1098 variant.

It's not a matter if a person can use the bike to it's limits, If that were the case most people would should be riding rvf 400's or the like.

We all paid more money for a 999 compared to it's rivals, Aprillia (which still had marscheni and ohlins and 140 odd hp) and all the Jap I4's. And we did this knowing that thats the way it is, ducati's are more to buy, but they are worth more to sell than their competitors, so it's more like money tied up in a toy rather than lost, think of it as in the piggy bank of you will.

For ducati to drop the price they are indicating that they are aware that their bikes have been overpriced, and the money that we all thought we had in the piggy bank so to speak has just been lost.

It's poor customer relations.

They're worried that peolpe ducati buyers wont buy a V4 without a trellis frame, they should be more worried that people wont be able to afford to sell their current bikes cause the new one is less than their current one was worth last week.

Whereas YOU, are in a much better situation, with your 998 being far and away superior to the 1098 ???

And to add to htis they expect people to buy an 1100 cc twin when WSBK rules will allow a 1200cc twin in 2008. Why would you buy a bike that is going to be replaced with one that is 100cc more in 12 months.

Their marketing dept must be 1st year out of uni!

The way I understand it, the R version will be 1200 - the tri-color is a variant of the S model - it is not the R

Thoughts/Suspicions of if/when there will be a V4?

Just a different thought on this. I was actually looking around for a hold over S model last week. I was thinking that this would be a good time to pick one up
at a little less perhaps + great interest rate. Glad I got over that one.
The 999 series bikes will always be something special as they are now and will be into the future. Personally I love the way my Fila looks with the upper nose fairing cutouts. With the light flywheel and the full Termi system the thing hauls
ass plenty fast enough for my sorry self. I have the suspension dialed for me
which makes the world a better place.
The thought of offing my 999r Fila or even my 916 to buy a 1098 is just not there. The Yamaha though, that is a different story.

I know they are really adamant <sp?> that there will be no V4 at levels of racing below GP. So I can't imagine Ducati developing a street bike based on a V4 unless they decided to mass produce the DD16 with much lower end components.

But who knows, Ducati surprises us once in a while.

I agree with DESMOWORKS. I prefer the look of my 999s and if I get bored with what it has to offer in the power dept, I'll wait till the 1098 engine kit comes from Ducati. Apparrently there is not difference in the bottom end.

I am very interested in the future of the 1098. I think it has some amazing pieces on it! I wonder if there will be some tweaking once they get a feel for what consumers want out of it. Much like the 749/999 when they changed the bodywork and swing arm - those were relatively small changes, but they transformed the look of the bike

If they would tweak the entire tail piece and make a single air inlet like the DD16 for the nose the 1098 would be much more appealing to me. The end caps of the exhaust don't do anything for me nor does the swing arm. I'm very interested to see the double sided version that is supposed to be on the R.

Or maybe Ducati figured out how to build it cheaper so they can sell it cheaper? Kind of like what every other company in the world is trying to do?

I'm sure the 1098 will end up being a great bike. I wouldn't mind having one also, someday. But, I feel so lucky to have been able to get a 999 before they were all gone. Seriously. You know, I hear a lot about how much cheaper the 1098 will be. Do you seriously think Ducati is taking a loss on the 1098 compared to the 999? We've only seen pictures but take a close look at them. It's not too hard to see why it's cheaper.

Why would you be bummed? If you get an R, you get yourself a very special and limited bike. The Fila and Xerox look damn sexy and perform better than 95% of us may need them to.

The 1098 will have its problems, and they will be sorted out by 09 I think. That happened to the 916 and the 999. With an R model, you always have something very special. I wouldn´t regret buying one.

Agreed, if its that much cheaper, something allowed it to be that way. No one in manufacturing makes more than a slim margin. For me, I love my 999s and will continue to enjoy it every time I ride it. If it were all about price/value, I would sell both of my Ducatis and just keep my 06 GSXR750 track bike.

That's the ticket. Rumors about a new superbike coming out this year have been going on for some time. So, I think most informed 999 owners knew something what was coming when they got their bikes. And, they've had some time of enjoyment with their bikes. Also, the new superbike isn't going to run for one year. If a 999 owner likes the 1098, wait a year or two and then get one.

You can't beat yourself on the head for not getting the lastest and greatest. If you did, then you'd be getting a bike every two years - at which point it's not a problem because you'd have a deposit on the 1098 anyway.

There were still 999s at list price in 2006? I haven't seen one at list price for a few years. Heavily discounted last winter and this past spring when my local dealer brought in some '05 models from other dealers and his new batch of '06s.

Yeah the new hotness is the 1098 but the 999 isn't exactly a slouch.
