first off I to the all knowing ducatiphiles on here. and now my question, i have found a '97 748 monoposto with a rebuilt title, relatively low miles(something like 15k i think) and its basically all stock. its for sale for $6900. im wondering ifthat would be too much to pay for it(considering that it has a rebuilt title). i'd love to get the duc but ive got to find the right price(i'm kinda pressed for money right now so i cant get one new). any help would be appreciated. thanks, spyke.

Salvage title bikes should only be bought for the track and real cheap too. If you want to know what it's worth just call a Ducati dealer and tell him it's yours and you want rid of it now and want to know how much he'll write you a check for. Better sit down for the answer.
i really want the duc cause i been on jap bikes to long. i want an italian they are so much more sexy. plus if i cant find an italian bike priced right i'll have to settle with an RC51 or TL1000R. and i really dont wanna do that, i've got italian runnin thru my blood(literally).
I got my 996 for 7,000. It was salvage title...."WAS". It’s good to have friends in the right places . As for the 748. The price is too high, I agree with Turbo329 about the price but I would even go up to 5,000 at most. But if you’re dieing for the bike there’s nothing we could say to make you not buy it. So if you get it, do some research? What happened to the bike in detail, What was replaced, and who did the work. I found some surprises with my 996, I ended up rebuilding the bike, and it was a damn good thing that I had a lot of spare parts.
You should be able to find something for less than that fairly easy.15k is alot if not serviced properly, hell 6k can be alot.Don't get burned like I did, $5900 for a 98 that I should have paid $5000 for with all the problems, and I rode the bike and thought it was fine until I started tearing it down.10 wasted rockers(which I was ready for because of the year) a motor full of aluminum shavings( seller just changed the oil before sale and said all was fine, but he lied because it was from a flywheel coming loose and scoring the alt. cover which was now all tight. This wasted various bearings requiring a complete motor teardown.)plus a wasted clutch that was supposedly new. I'm not saying this is the norm but I believe book value on a 97 was $6500 last time I checked and the salvage title should get you a significant discount. I know it's hard when your looking at the bike not to hold out for a better deal , I couldn't and I already had a really nice 900ss in the garage. But if you gotta have it at least try to do some negotiating and be prepared to spend some more.Sorry for the long post.
i know i looked at 1 bike that was written off (easy fix) but the paint was cracked where the trellis tubes were welded to the neck.might of been ok maybe not, otherwise it was only scratches and levers.could have saved big but for me,i just want to enjoy a toy,not worry about somthing i may of overlooked
well if anyone wants to see the bike heres a link http://216.242.235.54/motosear...=2008
take a look and tell me what you think. not to mention this bike is being sold in miami so the prices are going to be jacked up like hell(they think everyone in south florida is rich).
I picked up a 2000 748 with a "reconstruction" title with 12,000 miles for $4800.00. Things perfect! Bascally it passed all the DMV requirments and is go to go!
As another data point, my 97 748 with clear title, but missing r/h lower plastics due to low-speed low-side was $3,500. Mileage was 27k, bike was mechanically in good shape.
I bought my 2000 748S with 3500 miles in excellent condition for $7300 last Spring. Probably a little on the steep side, but it was basically brand new, and compared to double that price for a 749S, I think it was a bargain.
If its from a dealer ask to see the service records first. Somethings to look out for...valve adjustment (6000 miles), rocker flaking (make sure they have been inspected), the aforementioned flywheel nut, new belts (2 yr replacement interval).
Also what aftermarket equipment has been installed?
You are in lust. This is the worst time to make a decision. I agree that the bike appears over-priced, esp. given its title situation. Unless they can tell you exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) why it has a rebuilt title, and what had to be done to get it to the point it could be sold, then I recommend walking away.
Thgere are other nice 748s available (otgher fish in the sea, etc.) that make this a situation where you don't want to overpay and regret it later.
for me, the price is the problem, for the rebuilt status and the age of the bike. There are better deals to be had out there.
The rebuilt thing isn't too huge as long as the dealer can disclose the history or have the bike looked over by someone qualified.
If it was me, I'd offer the dealer an uncomfortably low offer and work from there.
