Default Installing Oil Cooler on 2000 748S

Hi,

I'm looking into installing an oil cooler on my 2000 748S and I noticed that many of the ones I see on eBay include the Oil Hose (Bikebandit.com Part Number 1619613-001) and Radiator Hose (Bikebandit.com Part Number 1619614-001).

The following is the link from Bikebandit.com for a 748R as reference (iconhttp://bikebandit.com/partsban...#stay).

I was wondering if those two hoses are enough, or do I also need to purchase the Oil Tube (Bikebandit Part Number 1628922-001) also.

Are there any other parts that I may be missing besides the fittings and gaskets?

I was also wondering if the oil cooler mounts straight up or is there any modification needed.

Thanks!

I did it, just haven't written the article on how to do it.

Basically, you need:
- the two large oil lines that go from the block to the cooler.
- the line that goes from the cooler to the heads
- the cooler itself
- the hardware to hang the cooler (blue cushy thing, an insert for that, and 2 bolts.
- the pressure valve that goes inside the oil filter well.
- oil line fittings and washers for the block.

If you compare your year 748 parts drawings to the 996 of that year, you'll see the parts you'll need.

With the oil lines from the block to the head, you'll need the mating fittings that match the oil lines you have.

You'll need a 10mm banjo bolt (with washers) for the oil cooler line to hook up to the line to the heads.

You may need to get new plates at the heads with 10mm banjo bolt threads or modify your existing ones. If you're lucky - your fittings may already be 10mm banjos - pull them off and measure the shoulders to make sure.

The oil cooler should mount right up to the mounting bosses on your front lower valve inspection plate, IIRC.

Hope that helps.

Go to Ducati.com and download the p.d.f. parts files for 748 and 996. Just compare parts at that point and you should be all set. That is what I did. Post any questions once you get started and we'll be here for you. It was a piece of cake.

Why? Don't all 4V's already have oil pressure relief valves? Either on the oil pump or on the crankcase depending on the model / year. My oil cooler gets here tomorrow and I'm shopping for parts today.

What Mark means is the bypass valve. You unbolt the threaded stub that holds the oil filter on and then slide the valve over the stub and reinstall it back in the cases. If you dont put this in the oil wont go through the cooler.

Mark - Is the oil pressure relief valve #14 in this diagram iconhttp://www.bikebandit.com/part...6.asp the one you are referring to?

Also, for the 10mm banjo bolts, I was thinking about purchasing the banjo bolts from a 2000 996 and see if it bolts up to my 748 heads. If it doesn't, should I just buy the new plate from a 996? Would they bolt right on?

Loosecannon - Did you encounter any issues on installing your oil cooler?

I ended up purchasing an oil cooler with all the lines from Mark Hatten (Wounded Duc) and I'm in the process of buying the parts to install everything.

Thanks, Paul

yep, that's it.

To avoid the issue of 8mm vs 10mm banjo's - just get the plates along with the lines and bnajos. Then you won't have to deal with drilling and tapping the plates. Lots less hassle to get them.
