Default CF belly pan

Can anyone think of a logical reason why Ducati would put non-functional CF belly pans on bikes like my FE.....?

I'm going to have to hit up my local boy rossi46. I think he knows how to mess with CF... I'll have him plug all the holes.

I got some 998 style bodywork for my project 748 and the carbon bellypan has 3 cut outs in the bottom. I thought I would hold fluid, guess I was wrong

Exactly! What were they thinking when they made that pan? As it is, it’s worthless. It's no secret I have a thing for CF parts, but I like them to be utilitarian... not just poser bling bling.

Ducati does have a CF pan (969168AAA) that actually “catches oil” and is made for the stock swingarm. I wonder if it will fit my side skins?

Ooooooooooo.... maybe I could get DanB with BenFer to make me one.

Hi Layne,

That part number (969168AAA) is for the bellypan that fits the older 916 style sides.

Your best bet is to source a MY02 748RS bellypan, part number 480.3.098.2A. That'll fit right on although you would need to do a bit of trimming to clear the side stand.

Alternatively, DP do one that allegedly is for 998 style sides and is pre-trimmed to fit with side stand. Never seen one in the flesh so can't guarantee it's the right thing - I always take the descriptions in the DP cats with a pinch of salt! Anyway, the part number is 96937402B.

Hope that helps, Neil

Thanks, Neil. I'll see what rossi46 and I can do first. If that won't work, I'll give the guys a DucSea a call.

I'd hope that I would never need it. But if it does dump oil, I'd much rather have it go into the pan than in front of my rear tire.

The only issue you'll have with closing the bottom of the stock bellypan is heat buildup. I've tried it and the bellypan lasted literally 20 miles before it burnt through. The RS/Corse bellypans are much deeper and wider than the stock 998 ones for exactly that reason.

If you're really stuck I may be able to get my hands on a genuine 998RS bellypan (ex Shane Byrne Monster Mob Ducati, complete with sponsor decals). Not sure if the guys still got it and it did have a (easily repairable) crack. Let me know and I'll make some enquiries.

Cheers, Neil.

You mean it's off this crazy mofo's bike..?

Here's a better view of the pan.

Yeah... just for shite-n-giggles ask the guy if he still has it and what he wants. I'll try and make sure it would work with my skins.

Thanks.

just a side note. i have a race type belly pan from DP. not sure if its the same as the RS one, but i have to trim the end part of it to clear the rear tire. i also have to do some trimming for the side stand. the pan was made to fit bigger exhaust and longer swing arm i guess. so now the belly pan is almost useless as well since it is open at the back and could only retain very minimal amount of oil, if it does leak.

Yeah, ducking, that's what I gather. Neil... it sounds like that pan you're talking about won't work.

Why have no DEALERS chimmed in with some answers on this. Hint hint.

I did call DucSea and didn't learn too much. I swear to God, if ever there is a question that can be asked that has never been asked before... it’ll be me doing the asking. It’s just not right.

I pulled the pan to see how tough it would be to matt over the holes. I looks real easy. I need a 6" x 28" piece of CF matt.
For those of you that haven't seen this bit of DP bling-bling. Here it is.

Now all I need is to see if Darin (rossi46) can hook me up with some CF matting.
I've already wrapped the exhaust pipe so heat should not he a problem.
One way or the other I'll "get 'er done".

That looks like plain 'ol 3k which I might not have at the moment but I do have some satin weave and some 2x2 twill. I can get some 3k, it should only take a couple of days. I also have some sheets of single pre preg if the pan doesn't have too much curve to it.

Layne,

I'll try and dispell some of the myths - and this is all from first hand experience.

I presently have a MY00 748RS/996RS belly and a MY02 998RS belly in front of me. There are differences between the 2 at the front to reflect the different style of sidepanels they attach to but crucially they are exactly the same length. I have fitted 748RS/996RS bellypans to 2 different bikes now and there are no clearance issues. The 748RS does not have the longer mag swingarm and the belly is still approx 20mm from rubbing the tyre. My own bike has full genuine MY02 RS bodywork with the 998RS belly and again, no clearance issues (I also don't have a mag arm).

In my experience, if the tyre is rubbing the bellypan then you have a problem. The usual causes are either non genuine parts or more likely the position of the axle eccentric. Ideally the centre point of the axle should be approx in the 4.30 to 5 o'clock position in relation to the centre point of the eccentric when viewed from the sprocket side. If you've been playing around with different sprockets and haven't fitted a chain of appropriate length then it's quite likely the eccentric may be too far forwards - that may, just, cause the tyre to rub.

Unfortunately I can't post pics here, so Layne, I've e-mailed you a couple.

Also, is that the beginings of a burn I can see on the inside of your stock vented belly? Trust me on this, if you close over the bottom the pan will be wrecked in no time at all. It just isn't deep or wide enough to cope with the heat build up from the exhaust.

Hope all this helps!

Neil.

The heat will build up much quicker at low speeds with a closed belly. If you are going mostly over 60km/h it won´t matter, but if you ride slow a lot it will be a pain in the ass with the heat i think.

Wrap the pipe. All enclosed bellypan bikes should have that portion of the pipe wrapped anyways.

for what it's worth, i got a cf bellypan from motowheels and it fits my sharkskinz very nicely. i have an 02 748r and the only trimming i had to do was to clear the kickstand. no rubbing with the rearwheel with room to spare. give martin a call and see if he can help.
