Default gearing question 749

Just wanted to see what some of the other members were running for gearing on their bikes. I am looking for a little more snap off the line. I ride mainly street with a few track days when I can. Any opinions/comments would be greatly appreciated!
Nick

i'm running 1 down in the front and two up in the back with a nichols fly wheel ..
it's like night and day ,, but ,, one down (front ) and one up ( back ) would work fine for most .. that's my next one to try .

Recommended Gearing

Questions come up regularly about recommended sprocket changes and the required chain lengths for superbikes. Here's my recommendations for general street and track use.

There's a "sweet spot" - around 4,600 RPM @120Km/hr in 6th gear for liter displacement superbikes, a little higher for 74X's. Obviously, faster tracks will require rear sprockets with fewer teeth, slower tracks more teeth (and possibly longer chains.)

I strongly recommended NOT changing the stock front sprocket or chain size for safety reasons. Just my opinion.

My 749 came stock 14/39. Couldn't go down any further in front so I went two up at the rear and change the whole setup to 520. Big difference! Much much better on street. Jason at section8 made the recommandation and I also got the stuffs from him.

Before you switch, ask yourself why Ducati (and all the other manufacturers) put a stronger, heavier chain on liter-displacement bikes. Is weight really the only issue here?

Somehow, in this day and age, I think lawyers had a lot to do with it... Safety overkill.

the only reason i would be switching to the 520 is because of the change in sprocket size. i dont think its a necessity, but saving some weight isnt a bad thing. besides that, i dont know that DID et al would produce a chain prone to snapping, just my though

Ducati (and Honda etc.) engineers specify chain size based on the torque of each model, not DID or lawyers.

If you go two up at the rear, you have to change your chain too because the stock would be too short. For an extra price of a front sprocket you are buying another big improvement.

OK, I give. Sorry to rob the thread here, but.....
Whats your background Shazaam and what do you currently do for employment?
You have some of the most intelligent and beneficial information of any poster I have ever seen. Interestingly enough, you seem to be well educated and knowledgable about quite a few different things. So I guess thanks for sharing with the community.
<end rant>

i'm currently running 14/41 on my 03 749, but am considering going down a tooth in the rear or even back to stock. but i'm also making 15-20 more hp than a stock 749.
