Default Best final drive for a 1997 748 Bi-Posto

I’m up for new chain sprockets & looking at making the most of what my bike does.
It’s a 1997 748 Bi-Posto, standard all ‘round except for Terminigonini cans & chipped to suit. Has 40,000kms on the clock. Currently has standard final drive of 14t front, 38t rear. (525pitch).
I ride mostly weekends/group rides/twisties & trackdays. No real commuting, or two/up.

On the safe side I was looking at going just a little shorter in the final drive (from 14t/38t) to 14t front, 39t rear, looking at getting that extra drive between the gear changes etc. I’ve heard of 14t/40t or 14t/41t, but this seems to be with a lot of track-focussed mounts. Just wondering what your opinion would be on this type of change?

Not sure if these figures for a 748 means anything:
Final ratio: RPM @ speed:
14/38 5336rpm 120kms/hr
14/39 5476rpm 120kms/hr
14/40 5617rpm 120kms/hr

Thanks !

Probably the most popular gearing change for this model for street use is 14/41. If you want a better sense of how this gearing will feel, drop down from 6th to 5th with your 14/38 stock gearing. This will give you the exact same gearing that you'll get in 6th with 14/41.

I've got the 14/41 setup (hey, that's a palindrome - 14/41 !) with a Renthal quickchange rear sprocket.

I don't sit and drone on freeways particularly - that's not what the bike is for. It works great.

You could also try something else - and have a relatively cheap "quick change" setup by going for a bigger 15T front sprocket, with a 43T rear - which gives you similar gearing to a 14T/40T combo, and then having the option to switch to a 14T front, for an even shorter gearing for the very tight stuff.

Or, go for a 15T front with 42T rear, which is similar to a 14T/39T combo, and a nice alternative shorter gearing by switching the front to a 14T

....just a thought!

BTW - I think all stock 748's came with a 520 chain, unlike their bigger brothers....

don't think there's really a "quick" change on the old superbikes. when you start swapping sprockets, you'll have to adjust the eccentric to fix chain slack and then you start messing with ride heights....

You're right of course....OK, add 5 minutes to adjust the ride height, if ya want. I'm a cheap bastard, so it would work for me, as an alternative to a QC carrier and sprocket setup.
I'm too slow on the track to worry about multiple gearing changes at the track anyway....

Don’t forget ...

A 14/38 needs a 94-link chain.
A 15/43 needs a 98-link chain.
A 14/43 needs a 98-link chain.
A 14/42 needs a 96-link chain.

Plus, you’ll need to raise your rear ride height with the 14/43 and 15/43 combos. Don’t forget to measure your rear ride height before making any changes.

cool, thanks for all that.

I might go 14/40. Didn't consider the ride height after the change but I'll make a note of it..
Chain length shouldn't be a problem, doesn't the chain come in it's little box long enough for anything (trim & fit to suit)?

Yes - often 120 links, so you should have plenty.

I put 14/40 from 14/38 on mine and it's a big improvement. Really wakes up the bike. Of course, you spin 'er up a bit more on those romps down the interstate, but it's really no big deal.
