I would also add that checking the bike right after you have it running won't work because you need to allow the engine oil to pool back in the case where you can accurately tell the level. I think at least 15 minutes might be sufficient.

I read that there is a problem with the 998s and the oil level. You are supposed to keep the oil level at the lower line. I'll get more details tonight, but I read it in the Desmotimes.

Forget the lines, just no more than half way up the glass and it's fine.

You only need to keep it out of the airbox . Not serious

I just looked at the oil level of my 03 998 (1700 miles on it).

When it is on the side stand, there is no oil in the glass.

When you put it straigth up (and cold engine), you see the oil level coming up and filling all the glass!!

So I suppose that the level is too high? What are the possible consequences? And how can I remove some oil? I just add that the 600 miles maintenance has been performed by a Ducati mechanics .

Actually , that is serious, it happened to me.

I would not ride a Duc that has a full oil eye glass.

Watch that oil level and dont rely on the last servicing dealership.

Yes there is too much oil in the motor. Possible consequence is through crankcase pressure it can force the oil up into the airbox where there is a drain line at the lower front and it will dump the oil out into the fairing and possibly onto the rear wheel. Just put the bike on an axle stand so it is vertical and remove your right side body panel. On the bottom of the cases (I'm assuming a non deep sump) there is the oil drain plug, it takes a 10mm allen wrench to loosen. Just put a drain pan under the motor and keep the plug in your hand blocking the drain hole. Let a little out and screw it back in. Check the site glass and do it again until the level is half way up the glass when the bike is vertical. I don't recommend letting out a bunch of oil and then dumping it back in since you can knock off bits of dirt and grit while under the motor.

Thanks for the tip! I'll do it tomorrow...
I am surprised that on the side stand , there is no oil in the glass. On my previous Monster, it was very easy to check the level : when you see the oil at the very low bottom of the glass on the side stand, it was between "min" and "max" straight up.

I never heard of such a phenomenom in France...
But my 998 is a US "unsold" model which came back to Europa (positive points : red mirrors and ohlins steering damper, negative point : you cannot shut the light while starting!). Perhaps I should keep an eye on her
