Ok, so it seems about 400 -450 bucks is what you guys pay for a set..
Now, my question:
Is the adjustability really worth it that much? I have a 749 dark, and haven't noticed any real discomfort/issues with the stock rearsets? someone enlighten me? Thanks
Also, my main reason for wanting a set is easy/cheap replacement, say I lay the bike down, I could get it back to "good" for fairly cheap without changing everything out.. Stock give TOO easily, and cost a pretty penny. Any advice for someone who wants an aftermarket set just for that? I assume something that would break off and have cheap replacable parts like the pegs itself. I also don't need just the rearset, but rear-set and shifter, as the shifter is a pricy sucker.
You me, it’s not so much discomfort issues as it is with foot position relative to the shifter and rear brake pedal.
With adjustable rear sets, you can position your feet so what movement is minimized and smooth.
If that’s not a problem for you, then don’t worry about it. Plus.. You can buy a lot of used stock rear sets on Ebay for $400.00
well my issue is that the stock rearsets/pegs just fold up, and transfer the rest of the damage to everything else, such as the shifter, which gives and tweaks/breaks almost instantly even at 0mph. I'm afraid if/when I actually low-side the bike, the shifter will snap instantly providing no means of "sliding", and the bike will be torn up.. Where-as an aftermarket rear-set will "drag" like a slider, and then I could just get another "peg" and it'll be back to new. Make any sense?? How much are the pegs themselves for aftermarket sets?
It depends on the various manufacturers, but replacement pegs are about $75.00 each.
I wouldn’t depend on pegs to save your bike. Besides, it makes more sense to have the peg give way than the frame.
If you want slide protection, buy yourself a frame slider kit.
Wow, ok, wasn't aware of the pegs costing that much.
Thanks for the advice. I'll start searching for frame sliders.. I know that they mount funky and you need to drill a hole, cost about 200 bucks too, so I should really get a set.
Yes, Gilles and what about Arrow? At least they're Italian! I have Sato rearsets on my street bike but am not completely happy and I have DP knockoff's on my race bike and am also not completely happy. I think ultimately more adjustability is the key. Acculign, Cycle Cat maybe and others like Gilles or Arrow???
I will receive my Gilles in these two days. Will give update in few days. I've never heard any good things about arrow except they are light. Arrow is from Italy but Gilles is from Germany.
I would like pictures of the Bidgood rearsets for a 749/999. I found "mentals", but they are obvioulsy for the old frame. Heres a shot of the old style though, thanks to Mental!
I got them super cheap and they are all that I am looking for. The 749S has multiple mounting holes, so I don't need a rearset that provides that. The Motowheels rearsets do have an adjustable peg though. They mounted up in 5 minutes and now I have a solid link to the bike.
i looked at the ones mental had picked up ,,, tried to send funds but got rejected!!!
i guess it has some thing to do with south africa .... but any ways .... didn't like the idea of grinding on a set ,,,, NCR's total drool factor !!! but setteled on moto's http://www.motowheels.com/ital...Parts
I made a comment earlier in this thread about Acculign. I have crashed with them a total of 6 times. My complaint has been that the peg does not break, but the more expensive mounting plate breaks. In all 6 crashes I had very minimal damage. The mounting plate tends to break, but the pegs stay intact, keeping much more expensive parts in good shape. In all 6 crashes, I only had to replace the rear sets.
I have struggled with my 749 for some time now, mainly 2 reasons
1) stock tyres (ok not a problem now thanks to advice from you all)
2) my lower legs being fairly short, and not being able to get my inner knees in the right place on the tank sides in order to "hoik the bike over"...
Well I have just received my acculign rearset, and WOW what a difference. I have a new found confidence in the bike now, to the extent that I am no longer considering trading it
I use Woodcraft rearsets on my Duc & when I was looking for rearsets for my other bike, I looked at both Acculign & Sato - I ended up going with TCM and they are sweet.
