Default 998 Exhaust Option and tuning question

I have a 998 with Sil Motor (Ferracci) slip ons and I am looking to tune it for the occasional track day (6-8 days/yr.) What are your thoughts to my option 1 vs. option 2?

option 1: install power commander and tune
option 2: splurge on a termi half system, ECU and power commander

I am leaning towards option 2, but wanted to know if you can really feel the difference. Installing the power commander would obviously mean less cash out of pocket.

Thoughts?

If you already have the slip ons. And like them I would go with the new 5.9 ECU. A new ECU and Power commander would be redundant. FIM Ultimap have a progammable ECU for the Strettas. BCM as well as others carry that brand. This is the option I am thinking of going with to smooth out my 998 with Arrow slip ons. On their website they have a tech section and a article about the 5.9 ECU's for the newer bikes. It is dated November of last year so they probably have had a chance to tweak their maps for alot of different scenarios. I.E. slip ons, half system, full systems etc. Hope this helps. Ken.

I went with option 2 sans the PC. What made the biggest difference was getting the CO set to 5% from the stock 1.5%. It takes a shop to do it since most guys don't have a Mathis tool at home or have an exhaust gas analyzer. Motor became almost electric smooth compared to stock.

Pro Twins in the UK is selling the Ducati Performance upgrade kit for the 998Bip at a really good price.

The kit consists of -

45-50mm Termi half system - Ti or Carbon
998s ex and in cams - same as 996R
ECU to suit

I know, I have just bought the kit.

I cannot comment on the results yet as I have not put the cams in yet, but the kit is supposed to lift the power from 123bhp to 136bhp.

Pro Twins is on -

UK - 01342 892 888

Good luck

Please enlighten a newbie to the Ducati Family. What is the difference in the 45 and 50 exhaust that everyone is talking about? I have just purchased a 2004 998S FE and am thinking about an exhaust upgrade but have no idea what to look for.

Thanks in advance.

It's a half system that converts your OEM 45mm pipe and cans to a 50mm aftermarket pipe and cans. A very nice mod when done along with a ECU swap OR Power Commander with mapping.

Do a search on eahaust, you'll get a 1,000,000,000 hits.

Re the 45 - 50mm question

I'm no expert but -

The basic 998 comes with a 45mm diameter exhaust system from cylinder head to silencer.

In Europe and the UK the 998S and the FE come with a 50mm system from cylinder head to silencer.

I don't know if the US 998S and FE have the full 50mm system like the UK bikes.

A popular upgrade for the basic 998 is to fit a 45/50mm system which retains the original 45mm first stage of the headers and replace the siamesed part of the system with a section that grows from 45mm (engine side) to 50mm (silencer side), allowing 50mm silencer cans.

It is difficult to get a full 50mm aftermarket system for the basic 998, as the shape of the sump is different to that of the UK/Euro 998S, and needs a different shaped header pipe under the engine.

All the exhaust manufacturers only seem to make 50mm full systems for the 998S, which is a pain as I have a basic 998.

Hope this is clearer for you.
