Hi. I'm a new member to the board and this is my first post. I'm considering between 748 or a 749. I originally had a '02 Monster 750 which I sold to finance an '02 MV Agusta F4S. I just sold the MV. I didn't llike the inline 4 and i missed the low end power of the duc. My question is I'm 6'2" I've heard that the 749 is a more comfortable bike than the 748. I'm assuming the geometry of the 748 would be similar to the MV. For the record my neck and wrists would start to hurt after 15 minutes on the MV. For the taller rides in the group, how comfortable/uncomfartable is the 748 vs the 749? I do prefer the look of the look of the 748 although, the 749 dark is growing on me.
The 749 is a more comfortable bike than the 748 for street riding. It's a flatter riding position, less weight on the wrists, etc. If you're missing the torque of the 2-valve 750, I guess the 749 4-valve would be okay, but it likes to be revved, maybe not like the MV, but it still doesn't have as much torque down low.
I am 6' 3" tall and I have had no problems riding my 748. I certainly wouldn't want to take it on an all-day cruise, but I regularly ride it for an hour or more in one "sitting".
That being said, it is widely reported that the 749/999 bikes ARE more comfortable than the prior generation such as the 748. It's too bad that the cosmetics of the 749/999 are ...uhm...deficient?
If you are concerned about being tall and improving your comfort on either bike, then DEFINATLEY consider some adjustable footpegs. If you can move your pegs back a little, comfort will be greatly improved.
This may be a moot point seeing as you have already sold the MV, but you can always customize the bike to be a bit more to your liking. For example, if you want more low-end grunt, install a larger rear sprocket.

Plus you should know you can't raise the bars on the 749 at all, the bodywork is just too tight. You can raise the bars on a 748 much higher then they are on the 749. Plus you can do all that and much more and still save money.

Thats definitely a matter of opinion. I admit that 748 front end looks nicer than 749, but the rest of the motorcycle (rear angle shots especially) is much more attractive on 749. But thats just my opinion
Thanks for the info. Shiflan, I did increase the rear teeth by 2 on the MV. It did make driving around town more managable but the power really doesn't kick in to about 7,000 rpm. I've heard that the rear footpegs and seat are adjustable on the 749. Is this true?
It also depends on what kind of riding you do. I have found the 748/996 bikes to be very comfortable, ON THE TRACK. You could say the same on very spirited rides or a quick pace. I haven't rode the 749 so I can't say but riding other bikes on my favorite roads leaves me tired and exhausted in a short time. Other bikes have restricted my movement and didn't support me the same way the 996 does and most have tended to feel a little bigger, making it more work to hang off or lean. What do you guys say, is the 749 a more comfortable track tool? The tank looks very supportive.
I'd agree that it depends on the purpose. The benefit of the 749 is that it has an adjustable height setting front and rear. There's no stock stearing damper on the dark but there is on the S. I had a 2003 SS before my 749 dark and I'd say that the 749 dark is way more comfy for longer distances (I'm 5'10") but takes a but to get used to the reduced distance from the seat to pegs.
It's way easy to hang off the 749 but I do find my one-piece Dianese suit doesn't play well with the narrow frame and tank geometry. My knees usually end up resting on the fairing beside the frame as opposed to gripping the tank. I'd say go for it though. I have no regrets.

I found that being short in the lower leg, that my knees either contacted the fairing as you mention above, or more regularly they seemed to sit at the point where the seat sides meet the tank- this drove me to the point where I was even considering getting rid of the 749 as I found that i could not exert enough pressure on the tank to push the bike over into the bends...
How did I get round it?
I fitted some acculign adjustable rearsets which have made the bike 10 times better!!!
as far as comfort goes ... the 49 99 bikes have it hands down . i think it has some thing to do with a lower seat height , and your postion is more in the bike rather than on the bike like the 48,916,96 and the 98 .
get an s model the seat is adjustable forward or back ( takes 5-10 min.) pegs can be adjusted ( get better ones ), as far as clip ons go ,, i used the fbf ones on th 48
worked great ,, it just flattened the angle of the bars , which like of few of us here are getting older , but hate to admit it !! I'm currently using them on the 49 ,,,, but i had to lower them about 1/2 " or so for lock to kock clearance
btw .. depending on which 7-11 i walk into i'm 5'7"
The 748 with stock bars is much more comfortable than the MV as the reach is closer.
You can add bar risers to the MV, 748 or 749 to improve comfort.
If you use master cylinders with remote reservoirs, you can raise the handlebars much higher on the 749-999 than you can on a 748-998. 6 hour rides on my 999 with bar risers is much easier than the same ride on the 916...
