Default Tire Recommendations

So I've got about 4K miles on my Pilot Sports (came with the bike), and I'm getting a flat spot in the center from the amount of slab I ride on. I'm looking for suggestions on what to replace them with. I've heard that people have had issues with the new pilot roads and pilot powers. I've had Dunlop 207s and Bridgestone BT010s in the past (on my VFR), and I really liked the BT010s. Has anyone run them on an ST? I want it all - grip, mileage, wet weather grip, cold weather grip, etc. I like to go out for spirited rides, and a track day is not out of the question either. Let me know what you guys think...

I've tried Pilot Sports, Macadam 90X, Macadam 100X, and now Pilot Roads. The roads have the best ride in my opinion. If you push it hard on the street or if you do track days then the Roads might not be the best tire. The Sports are good tires if you let them warm up.

Over the past 30 years (riding sport touring motorcycles of around 500 pounds), I typically get around 7k to 10k on a rear, and over 10k on a front. I've changed most fronts early for cupping or unusual wear. Some say that's excellent mileage but I don't usually run over 80 mph and don't do track days. High speed slab riding just plain flattens the rear tire. I hate slab riding.

But so far I'm liking the Roads for sport touring and moderate backroad riding. Haven't had them in the rain yet.

I like a softer tire up front and a harder tire out back. Maybe a Sport up front and a Road out back?

I'm currently running Pirellis, a regular Diablo on the front and a Diablo Strada on the rear, seems a nice combination so far. Not on an ST, but an S4.

I ran a set of Pilot Sports, felt somewhat vague and slow to warm up.
Also ran a set of regular Diablos, very nice, but I suspect the added weight and HP of the ST would make short work of a regular Diablo rear.

Hear you on the tire pressures but when you have nothing but flat prairie to cross to get any where interesting to ride it's hard to keep it under 90 mph, even two-up. Never trailered a road bike in my life, especially after watching the factory boys from Harley (good ol' Vaughn Beals included) trailer their hogs from Milwaukee to Road America. I'd have been ashamed. But...
Last weekend I broke down and bought one of those new Honda Ridgeline pick-ups so I can save the tires for the good stuff when we head back out to the mountains this fall.

So elkheart, how do the Avon's work on the twisties? I'm mostly interested in the transition from side to side with decent grip - not necessarily track tires. I thing I liked about the stock Pilot Sports was they were really nice and progessive, not like falling off a table - before they squared off from the high speed slab.

They've been great in the twisties even after crossing the plains to get to Colorado's heavenly mountain twisties. I'll keep putting em on 'til they're sold out. How do you like the Ridgeline so far?

Thanks for the word on the Avons again.
The Ridgeline is very nice. Looks are growing on me and definitely the only one in this town so far. Really like the "redrock" color. Rides better than my Pilot did - firm, but solid and very quiet. Stays surprisingly flat on the corners - more like a car in that way. VTEC music is sweet.

Just fits the ST4 in it too. But, I am still struggling with trucking my bike instead of riding it. Just the principle of the thing -it would be the first time for trucking a road bike other than to the track. I'm leaning towards riding.

Probably keep momma in a better mood trucking it though. But sometimes she is crazier about it than I am. Wouldn't hear of taking the car the 160 miles up to Minneapolis a couple of weeks back - in a driving rainstorm for 150 miles of it. None of the hog "poseurs" around here will consider it. Come to think of it, that's why I traded the RC51 in - so I'd have someone to ride with.

I don't run the Avons on my ST but I do run em on my 1100 Katana commuter (which I ride aggressively whenever there are turns to be had). Even on that bike, w.it's non-adjustable soft front suspension, the tires are confidence inspiring.

Def recmnd the Avons.

I do more twists then out and out touring and went with the PIlot Powers to replace my pilot sports. I am very happy with them, but can't yet determine longevity.
I have heard over and over again how great the Avons are and will probably try a set for the next round of tires.
