Default Better sounding exhaust on ST4S

Looking for suggestions for deeper sounding exhaust for my 04 ST4S, has 1,200 mi. Don't want to change other parameters (cpu, remap, or air filer) unless absolutely necessary.

Placed Arrow CF mufflers on my ST4s three years ago. Great deep exhaust note. Dealer put them on during the break-in service. Nothing but a minor FI adjustment required. No backfiring, great performance.

My '02 came with Sil Motor pipes (oval, CF). They sound great, and same as the arrow, only a slight tweak to the EFI was needed.

Had Ducati Performance cans and air filter fitted to mine from new.
Much nicer sound. Open airbox is LOUD at large throttle openings but good
Dealer just tweaked the FI to suit.

I have heard both Arrow and Sil Motor slip-ons and will say that the Sils sound far better than the Arrows. But this is a touring bike and I am not sure an agressive sounding Sil is for everyone.

Gianelli!! The dealer put these on before the bike was delivered (per my request) They sound great and the dealer did not doing any CPU work or airbox mods. They said it was not necessary to change anything. I'm up to 378 miles on the ST4S and am still loving it.

The ST4s is technically a Sport Touring bike, but it's a wolf in sheeps clothing. And mighty sexy clothing at that....... Go for the pipes, you'll love'em.

I have the SilMoto CF Ovals. Very nice sound and not obnoxiously loud, just perfect. Pure sex.

I've got SILs on my ST4 and they sound absolutely fantastic. Not too loud, but throaty and deep. I've heard ST's with everything from Arrow to DP and I think the SILs sound best.

And you'll likely have to do SOME sort of tweaking to the ECU (though I didn't do anything with mine - wonder what I'm missing )

Arrow pipes here, bought them from BCM. I think they sound great (i bet everyone says that about their own pipes)! I have drilled my air box as well and am trying to set a time to get it all dialed in at a good mechanic.
My Arrow CF's came in a box I could hold up with one hand. The weight saveings are incredible not that i am counting ounces, but easily two carbons pipes for one stock!

ARROW c/f slipons here too, also from BCM. Sound is deep and not all that loud, but these are subjective terms. I've never compared one aftermarket exhaust sound to another. The ARROW's came from BCM in a box via UPS that had a total shipping weight including all packaging material of only 9.0 pounds.

After 4 riding seasons the c/f still looks like new. I pulled one muffler apart last year to see about repacking it, but it looked fine inside and I just buttoned it back up.

My bike has a modified collector so it might be a little louder than a stocker. It also has some engine work so, again it might not sound the same as a stocker with slipons.

The ARROW's sound sweet to me.

You can always just modify your stock pipes. It's easy, and will only take an afternoon. Afterward, the exhaust sounds great. Adds a lot of low-end note to the sound.

Default Polish and core those stock pipes

A good winter project would be to core the stock pipes and then polish the cans. You'd end up with a one-off custom set of pipes with a great sound and a factory fit. I wish I would've done this myself, but early on I installed a set of Arrows and had my dealer dynotune the bike for them. Very happy with the resultant increase in HP and wonderful sound.

Ok how would you go about this with stock pipes? It's winter here and today is probably the last of the riding... always looking for winter projects.

While not cheap I replaced my stockers with a set of Staintunes - the stainless set with the removable diffuser. Very nice throaty purr with the diffusers in - just a bit louder than stock. Nice for distance riding.

Pulled the diffusers out (one screw in each can)and while not offensive to the neighbors they definitely make it sound like a real Ducati.

Great quality. Sound level option is very nice and only takes seconds to do. No re-map necessary.

I went with the Termignoni slip-ons for my '02 ST4S... What a difference! Weight... ( of course! )... sound!... and all 'round nice looking. No fiddling required, although I did bring the bike up to BCM this past August to be "tweaked" and Dyno tuned. No backfiring, runs/sounds strong. Sounds like a Ducati!

My main riding partner rides a Ducati 916 w/Arrow CF exhaust, he says the Termignoni's make my bike sound meaner/deeper than his... ( could it be that 996?! )... Flattery WILL get you everywhere!

BTW, the weight difference is incredible... ( as has been stated )... When I picked up my stock OEM cans, then picked up the Termi's, WOW!... the OEM exhaust weighs a ton compared to the CF Termignoni's. I still have the OEM exhaust in MINT condition. Not sure what I'll do with them... for sale perhaps?

My Red '02 ST4S mods:

Termignoni CF slip-on exhaust
Zero Gravity "light tint" screen
ProItalia Black Annodized vented CC
Speedy Moto SS clutch springs w/red annodized caps
14t front sprocket
Rear ride height raised 10mm

When I had my ST2, I purchased a second set of stock cans off Ebay for CHEAP!!!! and then modified those. That way I didn't have to do everything in one day, and if I didn't like the results, I'd still have my stockers. Well, I modified mine, and they were PERFECT. Have a good, subtle deep tone. It was exactly what I was looking for. I did have to pop in a DP chip though to help with some backfiring on downshifts.

In a nutshell:
1. Remove Pipes
2. Fin a nail (I found a roofing nail was perfect diameter) that will fit inside the pop-rivet, and hammer it until it pops out the ball in the rivet. (takes two hits).
3. Pop off the end, and dremel that bad boy.
4. Get new, similar sized pop-rivets (I found a cheap assortment at an auto store that was perfect), and replace the end caps.

All done! Just make sure you cut away enough that once the caps are back on, you don't see your cuts.

Speaking of ST4s exhausts, does anyone know who made the slip-ons that came in this kit:

I couldn't find any markings on them at all. None, zip nada.

+1 on the Staintune pipes. They are a great solution, and the diffusers don't take up much room in your bags if you visit a town with a "noise nazzi."
