The 4 is a higher revving motor and makes it's power higher up the powerband. Plus 4 valve head means higher maintance costs.
The 2 is lower revving and has the torque curve lower in the powerband...but..does not make as much hp.
I have a 99 ST2 with 50k miles....I LOVE IT!!!...I considered putting the big bore kit in it for more torque ( I've ridden one set up this way and it is nice),,but spent $$ elsewhere (748 trackbike).
My ST has been basically trouble free. Save for a warranty problem with contaminated coolant that was taken care off.
I've ridden this bike 2-up for maybe half the miles and have taken it to the track. The valves have needed adjustment maybe 4 times. The more miles these bikes have the less they need valve adjustments..I go 12k between adj. now.
I never take the bags off and I have a Ventura rack sys to supplement them for long trips.
I get 12k miles from Mich Pilot Roads.
The older ones need new seats...I've tried Corbin but now use Sargent.
The ST3 is a comparmise betwn the two....
Local dealer is selling ST3's (05) for $10,300
I think you can't go wrong with a ST
