My Wife and I just went through this. I wanted her to get a POS or at least a cheap jap bike for beginners, but she fell in love with the 620 MTS. So she now has the 620 MTS, despite my efforts, and in the end I don't think it was a bad move. She loves it! She wants to ride all the time and even commutes to work on it. She took a motorcycle safety class and took her time getting comfortable. The bike fits her well, uprite riding pos., narrow seat, it's not to high, light, and the power isn't scary. A set of frame sliders will relieve a little bit of stress but as of yet she has not dropped it, knock on wood. I was affraid that it would sit in the garage unused and covered in cobwebs, but she has a passion for riding now, maybe that wouldn't have been the case if I would have bought a boring beginners sled. Its only four months old now so things might change. I just felt I should tell you about our experience so far, no advice, just observations. Good luck and have fun.
