Default gasoline smell from 96 M900, runs poorly

My garage smells of gas since I bought my 96 M900 a few months ago.

After a recent service, the bike started running very poorly. I reversed the changes I made and inspected the work I did to verify everything was put back correctly and checked carefully for a pinched fuel line or vacuum line.

I suspected that the charcoal canister had become saturated and wasn't allowing the tank to vent and went for a ride with the tank open. The bike ran much better (but still not quite what it was). Has anyone else experienced the gas stink when parked (no leaks anywhere) and or the failure to vent? Have others eliminated the charcoal canister and have you run into any canister related problems?

Thank you.

Pull the vacuum line from the fuel pump and see if it has fuel in it. Its common for the diaphragm in it to "corrode"away and leak. The bike will run poorly and rich. You can get a inexpensive replacement from Chris at Ca-Cycleworks.

Thanks Ducman,

I looked in the vacuum line to the fuel pump and found no gas. I looked in the vacuum line to what appears to be a vacuum petcock and found no gas there either. I also pulled a vacuum on both of them (one at a time) and they both held a vacuum and didn't leak down. When I finished I blew out the line to the handheld vacuum pump and found no indication of gas in it.

Any other ideas? Thanks again, I appreciate the help.

Sticking float in one of the carbs, comes to mind as well.

It could also be one of the floats set too high so it leaks when on the side stand. I assume that you have checked for a tiny pin hole in one of the tank seams.
I have a nearly new charcoal canister from a S4RS that you can have, to try or tear apart for "new" charcoal (if you can somehow refill yours)(I can send back with Rick). You can also borrow my Monster fuel pump to try. Give me a call if you want to brainstorm.

Thanks Marvin. I need to install my new fuel filter & new gas just to be sure. I already drained the tank. When I drained the tank it created a bit of a vacuum, the gas came out faster once I opened the tank. That would support the theory that the canister is saturated. I think my fuel pump is okay as it holds vacuum from my vacuum pump. I will check for leaks in the fuel tank again. No evidence of any leaks so far but I know it doesn't take much to stink in an enclosed space. I plan to ride the bike after putting on the new filter & new gas and if not cured, I will bypass the canister and try it again.
