Default Engine died

Well on Friday the 13th on my way to work something bad happened to my engine. I was overtaking a bunch of cars probably spinning around 7 thou RPM, when I pulled back in the exhaust sounded louder and it felt like it was running on 1 cylinder. I pulled over, it died, I started it again and same thing except that there was a knock coming from the lower part of the engine. I decide to turn around and try and make it back home and I make it maybe 500 feet and she dies completely and wont even turn over. My bike is a 2000 M900S with 47,000 kms or 30,000 miles, well maintained, not thrashed. I dumped the oil and apart from very small pieces of aluminum there was a steel part that was corrugated, .060 thou wide, with slits in it (oil ring?) any body out there have a stock piston let go? Is that it? any ideas? Any feedback much appreciated.

Not allot to go on but have you checked the timing belts? Ducati motors are pretty bullet proof and I find it hard to believe the engine let go without warning

Yes I checked the timing belts, first thing I checked actually. I'm just curious has had a similar experience.
