There were rumors last year for a testastretta S4R for 2005.....
Let's hope for 2006 (even if nothing for the moment...)
It appears there's a S3R (desmotre engine from ST3) for 2006.
More news in few weeks.
Just after I bought my S4 Foggy I told my friend that they'd be making the S4 with the 996 motor and sure enough. So, just to be sure I put a 996 motor in mine with a 1036 BBK. That should show them. Phil
I love the S4R, it just calls out to me to be a cafe' racer. Clipons, rearsets, opened up clutch and loud pipes. It speaks to my soul.
I just need a bit more ooomph though it I am paying $13,000 not including the mods.
The Tuano and Trip are kicking out mid 120 bhp, and I know they don't have the monster feel or look, aura, and are a bit heavier, but I need around 130. Of course, I will most likely just shut up and buy it anyways. I would just love to have a 998 or 999 in it.
Why haven't they made the performance 996 pipes for the S4R, when that is what it is??? Why are we stuck with these small diameter pipes???
And just for shits and giggles, what would be the highest displacement I might be able to pull from the 996???

Sorry but I am going to hi jack the subject.
996 engine in a S4. I was thinkin to do the same. Did you use a 996 SBK engine or a ST4-S/MS4R engine? If you used a SBK engine how did you do with the swingarm? Are you using a SSS or a standard monster one? If a standard how did you attach the swingarm to the engine? What about cylinder heads? Do you have any problems with front wheel clearance?

jocke...
get an ST4S motor. more power than the SBK 996 motor and it's a direct drop in replacement for the s4. j-m996-s4 on this board did exactly that. the only real "problem" is that finding spare ST4S motors isn't exactly easy. they're not nearly as common on the used market as SBK motors.
we had a dealer bulletin from the importers saying that rumours of testastretta engines in the s4r and st4s for '06 were not true and that they weren't planned anytime in the near future.
with a bcm 1036 kit (2mm overbore to 100mm) and a 1000ds crank you get 1123.
the only difference b/w the 996 engine and the st4s/s4r engine performance wise is the inlet cams. they're shorter duration on st4s/s4r and overall a bit better. i really don't see any need to go to the later engine. even in the 998 with the decent style exhaust std there wasn't much difference to a 996. and you can make the 996 engine go well very easily.
i've had a 45mm cat replacement made, altho it was done on an s2r and the crankcases i realised later are subtly different. doh. should have the s4r one very soon.
if you have an s4 you could reuse most of the engine bits with new st4s/s4r cases, 98mm cylinders and pistons (or bcm 100mm kit), bare heads and valves. everything else will swap, altho you might need to get the pistons machined at the small end for the rod small end to fit in. maybe.

Beyote, read through the "Foggy" thread, with special attention to 1036Foggy's posts toward the end. Roughly, it will cost more than the price of a new complete Japanese motorcycle that has more HP:
I was asked in Italy about the engine future regarding the monster but a vague answer was given. From body language it'll be another engine transplant.

If your luck is anything like mine.....about five minutes after you buy the S4R w/996 engine!
The S4R is simply gorgeous, with the soul of an organic motorcycle that speaks volumes to you. I feel like if I adopt one, that I will be returning back to the roots of what makes the sport so much fun, witht he passion of a Duck and the trellis frame and the dry clutch. I had an NT650GT as my first bike, and the Monster speaks to me. I would also get taken out of the "keeping up with the Jones's" and the "I must have what is raced", situation. I would be left with pure enjoyment and making the bike an extension of myself.

No...... I spent untold dollars, and two years building the only bike I had, missing out on untold rides to build the bike of my dreams.
It was loads of hard work, and not luck, my friend...Luck wasn't involved.
Yeah, the S4R is a nice looking bike but the single-sided swingarm is bulky looking to me. Anyway, I'll never understand why they just don't but their biggest motor in it and then offer the other displacements. I just don't get it unless they have left over parts. Remember the 998 Final Edition? That was what that was I bet. Phil

Anything is better then the S4 sliding glass door rails. So they need to put the big ass motor in AND the 999 swingarm.

You slept with the judges? J/K
IMO there was absolutely an element of luck in your winning the DMC. Luck that the judges liked your bike the best that day. It was a subjective contest. I liked some of the other bikes better depending on the show.
