Default M900 tank leaking

Has anyone ever had a monster gas tank leak(very slowly) at the seam? its seems to be leaking on the left side on or near the seam/weld just below where the seat meets the tank. I cant find exactly where its leaking from but there is dirty gas(looks like oil)on the seam and a tiny puddle on garage floor. its leaking right over the spark plug which is not comforting! can tanks be fixed? or would i have to buy a new one?

Most of the leaks are usually generated from the hinge assembly contact area underneath the gastank -- so take a look there first.

Methods to fix? Take the tank off and strip it and get it welded/brazed properly. Or if the leak is really minor (ala minute seapage), just POR-15 it to seal the inside of the tank.

mine leaked the same way. it decided to do this right after i had my frame powder coated white. caused a nice yellow stain that took some work to clean up/cover up
anyways, after haggling with my local dealer they got Ducati No. America to replace my 10 year old tank. the final kicker was when i fired off an e-mail to them (DNA) stating that it was leaking at the hinge, they know this is a problem, and fuel was dripping on the rear exhaust manifold. i guess they thought they should do something about it. give this a try if you have a good dealership.
i tried sealing mine and it did not work. i followed the instructions to a T.
good luck.

thanks for info! its only a 2001 and its lived mostly in CA, so its had a pretty tender life so far, its obvious is a defect from ducati but getting them to fix it sounds like a big hurtle to get over. I am going to call around to some local dealers but I am not sure how much luck i will have. Thinking about it now its amazing the bike hasnt caught fire yet! did your dealer info DNA of the leaking tank issue or did you speak with DNA yourself?

i started with the dealer but also e-mailed DNA. i got their address right off the website. make sure you mention that you are not riding the bike currently (wink, wink) 'cause you are concerned it will burst into flames and charr your ass. that's pretty much what i said but in nicer verbage.

from 1st leak to dealer inquiry to DNA e-mail to new tank took about 1 month. i was pretty adamant with DNA that this was a known problem and that they should be fixing it. just like 900ss with cracked steering heads. they won't issue a full blown recall but they'll grease the squeeky wheel. especially one that says it may burst into flames. good luck.

i emailed DNA and waiting so see if they respond. the leak is so slow its really difficult to pinpoint exactly where it is. for sure though tiny droplets of gas are gathering around the bottom of the hinge. thanks for your help.

mine was the same. more of a seep than a leak. i never saw a drip of fuel. it was just always wet and dirty under the tank by the hinge. the way it messed up my frame is that i left it on the sidestand overnight. (usually i put it on the rear stand.) i came out the next AM and it was stained. i freaked.

i did. the leak was so minimal that i was not really in fear of igniting while riding. i was more concerned when i stopped and parked it after a ride or when stopping for a break. i carried a paper towel with me and would slip it between the frame and the tank on the left (low side while on the kickstand) side to absorb the fuel. it was very minimal. i was more concerned about staining my nice white frame. i have seen one that leaked worse than mine and would not have ridden it. he had an actual drip.

my cell phone rang today and it was DNA calling me! Surprised to say the least, but very happy. I have to take the monster to BH ducati to confirm its a bad tank weld. Proitalia said they could not help me since it was a 2001 bike(are you listening Proitalia:though they were very well mannered about their reasons). From BH ducati the regional rep has to get involved and then DNA will figure out what to do. Whats crazy about the whole thing is I already resigned myself to just fixing it since I didnt think DNA would be willing to sort me out. Ordered my POR-15 tank seal kit and was about to start striping down fuel tank! I did also mention I would be at the DOC presidents meeting this sat. at GP, maybe that helped!

Good work man!!, I have just used POR15, not because I had to because I wanted to...just to be sure ....don't wonna nutha fire

Interestingly my S4 never had a leak at all yet I number of others have this problem, same with the battery, never had an issue with that either.

mostaman- the leak is very difficult to pinpoint, and its actually more of a seeping not leaking problem so you could have had one and not really noticed. did you ever determine the cause of your BBQ'd bike?

No, the serious crash feds looked at it but the wiring that was left was powdery and there was no way of tracing any wrong doings in the loom.

We had a bunch of my bikie mates for tea the other night, we had a bloody good look at the tank, it has expanded unbelievably which would suggest it was under pressure for a while, the cap is burnt out and so it the fuel light sensor.

We don't know in reality and I don't think we ever will, the result is the same for a fuel problem of electrical problem, still disheartening really.

I don't ever recall seeing a leak or seep on mine or even discolouration for that matter, only 4 weeks prior it had belts, oils etc done and the big check over and there was nothing then.

I personally think it was probably electrical as the tank is inflatted which would suggest that all exits in the tank were good at least for a while anyway.

Anyway, so good that DNA are stepping up to the plate for your tank, that rocks, that is what I call good stuff for Ducati owners , all the best with the new one eh.

word from DNA is I have a new tank on the way, via a good faith warrenty. I am very pleased with DNA's timely response and their willingness to replace my tank from a 2001 bike. I am guessing the 2001 year tanks had defects but no proper recall. if anyone else suspects their tank leaking you should contact DNA about it.

Magic duc_748 that is great news, that sort of action and service will win far more over than shafting people.

thats awesome. glad it worked out for you. the only downside, and i really should not complain, was that the tank came with the new logo. my bike is a 1995 and had the best (IMHO) logo from the Cagiva days on it. i'll have it painted some day.
the shop may have to swap your tanks over. they tried that here but i showed up with only the tank and no bike. they let me slide.

Great News! My carbed tank leaked, then the efi tank leaked, had it repaired...and now it seeps, but only occasionally! It'll go for weeks without leaking, and then one day, the frame's wet, and the tank's damp with fuel.

DNA wouldn't warranty my sh*t because I had converted it to EFI. I just had it brazed, and then used some of that 'quick-gas-tank-repair' stuff from Autozone. It's good enough. I just don't want to have to try and duplicate the paint!

What is EFI mean? I bought POR-15 to seal the tank before DNA said yes to a new tank. I dont have much need for it now if you are interested in it, supposed to work very well.
