Default Monster 800 running rich or lean with slip ons

What do I need to do to keep my bike running properly?
Spark plugs in the rear cylinder is dark and exhaust cans have soot inside?
New ECU or PC? With a new ECU with adustable mapping is it worth the price $725?
My ECU is unmappable.
With a PC do I need to get it dyno'd?

R.

I'm guessing you have cut the airbox top or otherwise modded it to flow more air? If not do it. Then you have a few options...listed from cheapest to most expensive:
1 goto the stealership and get the trimmer bumped up a bit to even out the a/f ratio...$10 I would guess
2 Get the PCIII, install a map on the PC based on you mods so far.(no dyno needed unless you feel like throwing cash around)...
3 Get the FIM U5.9 thingy which should come with the correct map, if not get the correct map for your mods.

You could also purchase a MDST from chris over at ca cycleworks and bump the trimmer up yourself. ($249) If you plan on doing more engine mods down the road and you have the cash, you might as well go ahead and get the PC or U5.9(there are a few topics on comparing the two, just do a search). But if your budget is limited just take the bike to the stealer and get the trimmer bumped.

When I modified the cans on my 800 monster I had the dealer raise the settings up +2 points, when I opened up the air box with a k&n filter we raised it another +5 points.
As long as it doesnt run lean (white coloured plugs) and pulls smoothly you should be ok.
If you do a lot of around town running your plugs will look a lot darker than if you just do mainly long rides.
Idealy a pc3 is the way to go if you do a lot of commuting.
Going through the same delema with the s4 I have just brought, trail and error.

Hey R -

When I got my Termi high pipes on, the guys at MCC just richened up the CO mixture a little. Their mathesis was on the fritz, so they did it manually. Haven't had any problems at all. Very smooth running. No open airbox for me though. Hope ya'll get some warm weather up there ASAP! Take it easy.
