Default S4/916sp/996 upgrade

Question 1
If I buy a crank case, crankshaft with rods, 2 cylinders with pistons and 2 cylinder heads for a 996Bp very cheap. Is it possible to take the rest of the parts from a S4 engine and install in the 996 engine and getting it working. Ofcourse I will need to sort out the swingarm issue and it might need some different pullies for the timingbelt but exept for that. Do i need some thing more? The engine will be runned with S4 electronics with a PC3.

Question2
What does need to be modified an a 916 sp 3 engine (ZDM 916 W4) to work in a S4. The things that I can see is the problems caused due to different ECU and generator. Is it possible to sort this in an easy way? What needs to be changed.

What are the valve size on a 916 sp3? I have also heard that 916 sp engines will be possible to upgrade to 955 without machining the case. What is the differens from a normal 916. Is it just a bigger hole for the cylinders in the case on sp or is it also different spacing between the studs? Does it have a stronger case?
Jocke..............

i think it would be easier to deal with the 996 motor components for the sake of the alternator and timing pickups as compared to the older 916 styles. at least for the sake of the s4 ECU working correctly.

as for what parts are interchangable, i'd suggest downloading the spare parts sheets for both bikes and combing through the engine sheets EXTENSIVELY to size up what's the same and what's not.

cams/pullies are definatley intgerchangable between the two bikes, though you'll need longer belts to run the 996 heads. one issue to be aware of is limited clearance between the longer 996 horizontal head and the front tire on full suspension compression. also, not sure how much room there'll be for the battery and whatnot under the tank.
check out the "foggy owners" thread for some posts from infoage1. he's put some 916 heads on his s4 and may be able to help sort out fitment issues with you.

The only things I can add are:

I do believe the tensioning and idler pulleys to different between the S4 and the SBK. My SBK belts were too tight with S4 pulleys and SBK heads. Not so after I milled the heads

Head to front tire clearance is "ok" but not generous at around 5/16" (bottomed, no load). I have bottomed my forks, and did not hit. I may be getting a new set of triples in the near future, if so, maybe I'll lower the front end to take a more precise measurement.

The battery fits in under the tank fine. You will need to figure out something to support the rear of the battery tray. No big deal. I can take pics if you need. I shimmed the rear of my tank less than a 1/16" to allow a little more room for the tank wiring.

It might be possible to have the studs moved in your S4 cases, and bore the holes to allow the 996 cylinders and heads. If possible, that might be the easiest. Anyhow, it all sounds like a lot of work

916sp run 34/30 valves. the cylinder spigot holes in the cases are 2mm bigger. the only desmoquattro engines with different stud spacing are the 996 - 996/st4s/s4r.

you can make any of this work, but you'd be far better off with a st4s or s4r engine.

you'd need to swap the 916sp timing gears and primary drive cover for some single pick up 916/748/st2 early alt ones. then it shoud be fine
