Default S4 vs S4R or 916 vs 996

I believe the Monsters have detuned superbike engines, but is there a great deal of difference between the 916 and the 996 engines, disregarding the obvious displacement increase??? Are valves different? Is the power that much different?

If I were to buy an S4 and ride it, then jump on an S4R, would the extra price be worth it in the form of performance?

S4's generally get get about 100HP on a dyno.

S4R's will get about 110Hp on a dyno. You might notice the difference but you notice how different it looks everyday. How much it's worth is really up to you.

Both bikes are great! The S4R IS noticeably faster all around. But a great deal on a S4 would make you happy Im sure.I have a new set of JE 12:1 pistons in the box for a 94mm engine: ST4, S4, 916. Contact www.ducshop.com I just spoke with Mark yesterday, and he said they just did a Pistal 933 kit S4 and a 12:1 high comp. S4 earlier. Would be cool to see how they did against an S4R. You could ask him for some dyno numbers. Great guy! Well, honestly my pick would be the S4R. BUT!! With extra money saved from buying a S4, you could really do some work and it could end up being a better bike all around. Its always cool to have something that isnt like everyone else.

Agreed! I have an ST4 (916) with some motor work and it smokes 996's, 998's, ST4S's, and stock 999's with ease (in a straight line). 120 rear wheel HP. The looks I get from superbike riders is priceless. Yes it's "just" an old 2001 ST4 with slip-ons, but it's a sleeper.

It's always cool to have something that isn't like everyone else. Well said.

As standard it is a bit difference. If you put on slipons and open airbox the difference is not big. It all goes wrong in the headers I think.

I think that a properly tuned S4 with ST4 headers, slipons and open airbox will perform as good as a S4R with slipons and open airbox. 45 mm headers to a S4R are expencive. St4 headers you will find on Ebay for less that 100 dollars.

Also check out Brads page.

http://www.moto-one.com.au/performan...ucperfkit.html

For tuning a S4R is a better start as it has bigger valvs 36/31 S4 have 33/29 i think so it is cheaper to get big power in a S4R.

My S4 is just about to receive red heads from Guy Martin. It will also get a 984 kit next winter.

The last run I did was at 111hp with ST4 headers, SPS cams, open airbox. I started at 99hp.

I hope for 125 with red heads and with the kit 984 I am hope for 130hp

I dont know for the heads only as I send him alot of things in a package. The heads are just a part of the job.

[QUOTE=Beyote]I believe the Monsters have detuned superbike engines,QUOTE]

Just to clarify. Monsters do not have de tuned superbike engines.

The only detune is a 40mm headers but I guess that you would change that anyway.

They do have different inlet cams but it is not a detune. It is just improvements based on 10 years experience of using the same cams.

Infact 916 and 996 are using the same cams as the first 851 and that is from the 80:s so thay are sort of stoneage.
