996 SPS Performance Mod
Hello all,
It's been sometime since my last post, actually none since the new site but what do you think would be the single most bang for the buck performance mod for a 996 SPS. All of my riding consist of back country road twisties and some beltway. Just want to power up a bit. No track days to date , i know that im missing loads of fun but that was my speel of convincing the other half of me getting a bike, no racing yeah right and no wheelies. some may say pussy but i have managed to get an 03 RC 51 and the Duc 996 SPS with that aproach.

Is your SPS completly stock?
From what I hear...Wheels make a big diff especially if it spends most of it's time in the twistys. My SPS came with the magnesium rims already installed by the previous owner, so I have nothing to compare it to, and am unable to judge how much difference they actually make over stock. Also, you may want to look at the gearing, I'm running a 15/39T on mine wich really seems to be a good combo for the closer ratio gearbox.
The lightened flywheel from nichols really wakes the SPS engine up, but it's not really going to give you any more power...It'll just spool up a bit faster...but it makes it fun to ride!
If your looking for braking, slap on a set of 4 pad calipers and lines...they bolt right on, and make a huge difference! I went with the radials, so my bang for the buck ratio was severly cut down...but damn they stop nice!
Put a power commander on it...the stock chip is pretty rich and has a pretty bad flat spot in it...There again, it wont really give you anything power-wise, but it will make it more manageable.
Hope this helps a little bit.

What are you looking to do, and what are you wanting to spend? (guess I should have asked this first off)

996 SPS Performance Mod
I guess im maybe looking for a breakdown of what a particular $ amount may purchase me from lets say $1000 - $ 4000 range. I dont know that i will spend the $4000 right now but ultimately im looking to get 150hp at the rear wheel and anout 85lbs of torque. That being said this could probably take place over the 3 to 6 mos. Thanks in advance

PM duc572 he built a pretty healthy 99 996 SPS not too long ago...he'll be able to help you out a little better. Sorry, I misunderstood you, I thought you wanted the "less expensive" surface tweeks...

150hp at the rear wheel for $1000 - $4000? The SPS had 123hp at the crank and about 75ft/lbs of torque stock. To get 150 RWHP you would have to make about 170hp at the crank. From what I remember, the SPS had extensive internal modifications to net that 123hp...so I think your options are limited.
In all seriousness, the only way you will make that much hp would be to install a nitrous kit or a supercharger. Here in the San Fran Bay Area, there is a shop called Cali SuperBikes http://www.calisuperbikes.com/ that supercharges sportbikes. Jason Keats is one of the owners, and he has a supercharged Ducati (916 or 996) in addition to a supercharged GSX1000 and R1. He bought my 2002 RC51 a month ago, and then I bought my 999. He is planning to supercharge the RC51. And I thought I was a speed addict.
Here is my question for you: If you really wanted that much hp, why did you buy the SPS? The SPS is a special bike man, and in the right hands is a devastating weapon on the track or in the canyons. Not to mention is just looks freakin cool. It is also a very expensive bike to this day, so any radical mods you do to it will severely cost you in the life expectancy dept. For the amount of money that you would spend to get the hp you really want, you could keep your bike and buy a Hayabusa. You can pick one up for $5000 off craigslist.

996 SPS Performance Mod
Thanks for the info RastaRN but I think that a Super Charger or Nos is a bit more extreme than what I was Looking for, just wanted to add more grunt than what i have in my RC51. To answer your question though I purchased the SPS because I believed it to be a rare and special bike as I also own a 03 RC51.Also I am not fond of the current Super Bike styling at all but to each his own. You do make a valid put in regards to longevity. That being said, maybe i should just concentrate on some of the obvious such as lighter wheels and a power commander and take the reliability that i currently have and call it a day.

Changing your gearing will probably be the most noticeable performance mod you can do. I remember changing my RC51 from stock to the 15/41 sprocket 520 chain combo. It transformed that RC51 into a torque monster. My top speed was reduced, but it was well worth it.
I'll be changing my 999 from the 15 tooth front sprocket to the 14 tooth as soon as I have it broken in. Then when I need a new chain, I'll do the 15/39 sprockets with the 520 chain. That seems to be the most popular setup on this board.

If you are looking for more power, you can always have a 1036 kit installed. It was good for about 12 hp on my 996.
The most dramatic modification you can do is to install lightweight wheels. Buy the lightest you can afford. Once you do, you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner.
Gearing and rotating mass reductions also improve performance and enjoyment, but individually, they aren't as a dramatic change as the wheels. Every change increases the smile factor.
But be careful... its a scientific fact that one ducati modification will lead to two.. which will lead to a third...

If you look at Mr hyperpastas page and look for Matts bike you are close.

I think that is is good as you can get it with a SPS without needing to robb a bank. To do this you will only have to robb a small seven eleven.
If you want most power for the money just adjust the squish, time the cams and set up the injection properly.
