Default The 996 998 race bike thread

Good people of Speedzillatown,

herewith I demand the sexiest pictures of your 996/998 race machines.

I know there are quite some sexy built machines out there in our lovely community. You may also post heaps of RS and factory race bike pictures. As long as the pics may all give us some serious desmo-caused wood.

Doesn´t matter if you show off a whole bike or just a sexy engine, engine parts, carbon fibre whatever or works material.

Let´s go!

my old 916 SPS, raced it in 2007.

142 HP (crank) with Pistal pistons
54mm exhaust
Tellert CTS4T quick shifter
Performance rear sets
Brembo P19x20 brake master
P34/34 brakes cylinders

If i put a PR19 on a 998, can i re-use the stock brake line (right length?) or should i go for a new one?

Left side shot. I wanted to make a bad ass track bike that was something a bit differant and would last a bit. Bought a 2000 996RS engine from Bruce Meyer(BCM fame) to go with the corse frame I was running a modded 996 in for a few years. The frame was complete with RS mag swingarm,mag offset triples,Airbox,ect,ect. The only things not true RS/Corsa are R/T forks, 54mm exhaust and a 748RS harness,which means it is front mount and matchs all the connects but is for a 1.6 CPU. I put '99 Pistal pistons in it to lower the compression a bit(make it last). I had to swap out the entire left engine side from a donor 996 to get the parts needed for a 1.6 conversion. Also added a starter motor. It was about a year project to get it up and running. Engine was rebuilt with fresh bearings, valves, ect as well. Makes 150ish HP.

How much time inbetween services do you grant the bike?

The whole thing looks pretty clean. How much does it weigh?

It truly is a bad-ass bike, I've seen it myself (usually as it passed me and rapidly disappeared!). A friend rode it and said it was the only Ducati he had ridden that had so much power it was outside his comfort zone. I think he's being modest about the work done to this bike, it's built to the nines, and the results are worth it, IMHO.

Wow, awesome bikes and great idea for a thread!!

150 hp and 370 lbs?!?!

If anyone has links or high res pics of the factory racebikes, that would be much appreciated. I've scoured Ducati.com and the internet, and it seems that most of the period pictures were taken in low resolution.

This stated life as a 95 916 Strada. One of the first in the US. Which I bought new.
I broke it in on the street and then started racing it in Twins and Heavyweight classes in supersport trim against the GSXR’s, ZX-7’s, and YZR’s of the day.

A racing incident that required some parts replacement and the increasing speed of the new Suzuki 750’s started the bike down the road to what the photos show.

Probably the only original parts remaining on the bike are the frame, rear subframe (amazing considering the times it’s crashed) swingarm pivot, ECU, rear axle, and rear brake m/c and caliper.

The bike has gone through several configurations and probably at one time or another has suffered any and all of the usual maladies that effect desmoquattros. But I still have it. I still ride it. And I doubt I’ll ever get rid of it.

Dave Moon at MCC in Villa Park, IL does my engine work.
Doug Lofgren did FI tuning.
Peter Kates, GMD Computrak Boston did geometry and suspension.
I take it apart and put it back together.

Here’s an incomplete list of what’s there.

Motore:basically a 95/96 955 corse engine.
-Heads with 37 & 31 valves and 431 & G cams, ported by some mystery guy in Germany. I bought them used from Doug Gross who I think still races down in Florida.
-Dual injector 50mm
-Termignoni 54mm Corse exhaust.
-955 pistons and cyl.
-Carillo rods
-Nichols flywheel.
-Al belt pulleys
-180w lightweight alternator
-lightened primary gears
-Corse 955 cases.
-916 Racing crank
-CR gearbox
-STM slipper clutch
-RS radiator
-Corse oil cooler
-various covers and bits in Mg and every bolt in Ti.

Chassis:
-Mg swingarm & hub
-Mg steering hub
-Marchesini Mg wheels
-Corse rear suspension link
-Ohlins Triple clicker shock
-Ti rear brake disc
-Attack adjustable triples
-Ohlins R&T forks
-Ti axle
-Brembo narrow track racing rotors and racing calipers
-Brembo radial masters
-every bolt in Ti

Other;
95 Corse CF fuel tank
CF breather box
95 Corse airbox
Corse wiring harness
Corse instruments.

And……….

You have a titanium rear rotor? That´s a first - for me at least.

Nice list of parts mate.

Is this the best configuration you have ever had it in? Or was there some other state (like with the standard swingarm) which you liked better?

Why don´t you get a 996 RS or similar engine? Got enough power?

That's the best configuration right there. That was a few years ago.

I bits and pieced that bike together over a period of something like 6-7 years. There were no 996 corse motors when I started. Besides, 955 Racing replicas you could kind of build.
I have a friend who has a 955 Racing and a 996RS. Park my bike next to the 955 and except for the forks and the rear brake & hub it's pretty close.

Right now it is running with a 996SPS motor with a starter system. Retired to just doing track days anymore we'll have to give up 10-15hp and 10-15lbs and the 11,500rpm rush for reliability and convenience.
