I bits and pieced that bike together over a period of something like 6-7 years. There were no 996 corse motors when I started. Besides, 955 Racing replicas you could kind of build.
I have a friend who has a 955 Racing and a 996RS. Park my bike next to the 955 and except for the forks and the rear brake & hub it's pretty close.
Right now it is running with a 996SPS motor with a starter system. Retired to just doing track days anymore we'll have to give up 10-15hp and 10-15lbs and the 11,500rpm rush for reliability and convenience.

Thanks for the information mate, good stuff. Really enjoyed sucking up the info. How would you describe the 955 engine compared to the SPS? Since you said it was a corse spec engine, I´d guess you´d have the rev limit over 11500? Because any SPS will do that in stock trim, at least mine did with the 073 eprom.
15 lbs is the starter motor and the alternator + flywheel?
mrgrn+webman: never knew that this was so common. Did you weigh the difference at any time?

yes but i have forgotten now
the ti rotor is less than 1lb and the OEM has to be like 5-7lbs so very significant

Can anyone post some close ups or a bit of a guide to cleaning up all the cooling routing? Those bikes have a really simple looking cooling system layout compared to the stock bike, and I'd like to do that on my track bike when I put the new heads on. Or if you have a set of hoses and pipes that you don't need, I'll just buy them.

The main thing that is done is the elimanation of the thermostat and union junction with sensor(coolant) that is with it. The corse harnees always you to install this senser directly to the right side cylinder wall and plug in there. Of corse you need open belt covers for access. Although my rad looks stock its actually an early corsa piece were the top pipe bends to the side,not down like a stock one. You would also need the "Y" pipe I have or the 955 that runs outside the frame.. If its a stock frame you need the one like the 955. A corsa frame mounts both coils on the right hand side of the frame to make room for the,inside of the frame plumping run.
As is typical for just about anything corsa/RS , it takes a bunch of parts to make one system run. I,m also afraid most of the 996RS parts are just about gone now. If anyone in the US has them it is AMS, but you WILL pay for it.......

It seems Revs, more that anything else, are the death of Desmoquattro motors. While the 955 with 431 and G's would still be making power beyond 11,500 I couldn't afford to rebuild after every race meeting. And cases are expensive and I cracked a couple sets of those over the years. I think the factory 955 Racing manual calls for replacement cases every 1000km!
That's why I don't rev the SPS over 10,200.
One of the big differences is the CR gearbox. That makes an engine feel like a race engine. That and the lightweight internals. I transfered the lightweight flywheel, gears, and put a lightweight alternator in the SPS but I'd guess the crank is still heavier than the corse one.
Add a starter, starter gears, sprang, wiring and a bigger battery, plus the 996 motor is heavier to begin with and it's easy to pick up the 13 additional pounds I measured. I only wish I hadn't gained 20lbs too since I quit racing!
