need help to decide......

'94 RM250 vs '94 KX250 vs '99 CR250 vs yz400f

Hello dirt bike experts out there...I'm trying to decide which bike to purchase. i,ve been riding street bike for 15 years now, recently i decided to give dirt bike a try. I'm planning to ride trail. Any opinion and suggestion would help..

Well, trail riding can be many things.
Flatter terrain woods riding is one thing, Rocky mountain single track another.
Can you do your own maintenance ? If so, a four stroke yz400/450 is a good choice. Two strokes are much easier to maintain and rebuild imho.
I also prefer their snappy power characteristics, but you need to learn how to ride them. Both animals can be ridden on any kind of trails however, if youre skilled.

thanks for the reply guys....what's crazy i end up getting non of the above ...i got a '94 yz250 instead. This thing is a beast.I couldn't resist it, it was really cheap ($600), basically stock except for the racetech fork internals and shocks. bike is really dirty but runs really good. I'm in the process of tearing it down to clean it. drain and replace all fluids just to be safe.. will post pictures when i'm done....cheers

Do you have to have a title in CA? Did you get one for $600?

In MO it is a real PITA. So many old bikes don't have them, but to be legal you have to register them using a title (even off-road).

Yes, I have the pink slip, and it's a green stickered bike (registered)so i can ride it on the trail all year long, the only thing is it's been expired since june 2011. It may cost me $100 to register.......thanks

Stay away from the zooks they have suffered from chocolate gearboxes from the 2t days and still do, I learnt the had way last week. 2010 RMZ new 2011 gearbox 10hrs ago lost 4th and 5th gears now the RM 125 and 250s had similar reps too weak detent springs and poor hardening on the gearbox components. out of those bikes the CR or KX are your best bet YZ are nice bike and solid for a 4t (heard instances of 100+ hours) but they will be getting long in the tooth now so budget for a full rebuild ie rod, piston, valves, mains etc that may well cost you up to £1500 IMO you'd be better off spending the money on a newer bike. if yuo are riding trails look at enduro or trail bikes like the for want of a beter model DRZ or CRF450X they will have a less agressive tune and will be more suited to trails be it fire roads or single track in the woods. Husaberg, KTM and TM make some nice 2t trail/enduro bikes.
