It's a Honda. It will stay together. I love my CRF450X.

Like the CRF250's, ten hours and the valves are out of spec.

I am told by Honda that valves will not be an issue with this little screamer. It was evident at Glen Helen today that the mini line was full of these things already.....with the little kids who just came off riding the two stroke 85's.....I saw all of them trying to ride this thing like a two stroke....bouncing them of the rev limiter....Honda says they designed this tghing with that in mind. Besides, Its really Yamaha who has the 250 valve problems. Thats why they have a mandatory recall campaign that replaces all 3 intake valves with updated ones. Holeshots were the norm for these things....I expect to see alot of used minis being traded in for the 150's. Yes they are a little pricey......$4299.... But until you have actually checked one out or ridden one.....they are so BAD ASS its worth every penny.

I have on of the '06 YZ250F's that have the valve recall and I was told that it only actually affected a few units so far, but that they were all susceptible to it so that is why they are replacing them all.

I don't see what the big deal is though. They made a shitty part and are replacing them all for free. You just have to drop the bike off an pick it up. Not too big a deal. Yamaha sent me a letter in the mail that said to drop it off at the dealer and they'll take care of it.

EXACTLY!!!!!!! I work for a Yamaha/Kawasaki/Honda Dealer. We have only seen TWO actual failures of the yz 250 F valves. And I have probably replaced 25 sets of re-call valves in new inventory bikes and customer bikes. Very basic 2 and a half hour job which Yamaha pays you 4.1 hours to do. Very commendable for Yamaha to step up like they did. I just recently purchased an 06 YZ 450.....the yellow anniversary edition. I could have bought any brand 450.......and with servicing all of them and the problems/failures i have seen...... It only came down to the YZ 450 or the KX 450 F. KTM??????? thats a very funny joke!!!!!!! Maybe if they could ever get there suspension sorted out.....even then........Thats the last bike i'd ever own....unless a supermotard.

Hey:

I'm thinking about one of these as a first bike for my 12yr old son. The small wheeled version fits him well. However, they arn't green tag compliant with the existing exhaust. Anyone know if if an aftermarket with a spark arrester is available?

Thanks.

Absolutely! I believe Dr.D <Dubach racing Development> already has there pipe made for the 150. They have a race only version and one with a removable endcap to fit a spark arrester screen. No difference in the pipes just a removable end cap.

A new exhaust wont make it compliant. First bike should be a xr100, he wont be intimated as much as with the crf. You can learn much more on a bike you can control & ride to 100%. Your son will be a better rider faster on a xr. Maybe he will like the sport for more then the 100' jumps & Metal Malitia BS that most of the young kids want. As you know the sport is dangerous enough when we keep the bike close to the ground, 20+' in the air puts a lot of kids in wheel chairs.

Correct about the Spark arrester not making the bike green stickerable. This is a red sticker bike. But with the spark arrester you will be legal to ride all OHV areas........The 150 is not a bike for a beginning rider. If he's 12 years old and never ridden....The crf "f" models, not the "R" model is a good choice. Or the Yamaha TTR. A TTR 125 would be good.

If I was 10 again I would be BEGGING my parents for one of these things. They seem so far beyond the other bikes in their class that overnight they have essentially made the 85cc 2-S class now the 150cc 4-S class. And while they are expensive, you would have a tough time buying a new 2-stroke 85cc bike and modifying it to be as fast for the same money. Of course the 150's will have money thrown at them as well so the arms race just continues....

I just wonder how long it will take the other three and KTM to come out with their own version. But Honda trumps them all again.

BTW I saw KTM will soon have a 144cc 2-stroke to compete with the 250 4-strokes. Might be a nice bike, and possibly competitive. Different enough too that those wanting to stand out from the crowd will buy the orange smoker. My how times have changed.

They're not legal to ride in the 85cc class, a 125 four stroke is the limit in that class.

Unless the AMA changes the rules they will probably only be allowed in Supermini or Schoolboy type classes.

It's funny that this little bike is generating as much interest as it is amongst us.

The choices for my son are the R or F. He, in his blind 12y/o lust, only has eyes for the R. However, the F may better suit him and my neighbors- who he will undoubtedly torment. The seat height for the small-wheeled R is the same as the F, so the fit should be ok. Moreover, the F, while a lot tamer than the R, has also generated a lot of positive fanfare. Moreover, the F is green tag friendly.

But that's not all. I also have a 10y/o daughter who also wants one. She's tiny like her mom so it'll probably be an 80 for her. If anyone has recommendations on a 70 or 80cc first bike I'd like to hear them. TIA.

No way I'd start my 12 year old off on a race bike.

I'd probably start him on a Yamaha 90 for a couple months, then give it to the daughter if she proves that she is into it. Next up an XR100 or TT125 for 6 months or a year. Sell the 90, give the girl the 100/125 and let the kid have at it on his dreambike.
He'll learn more, have less chance of getting hurt... and appreciate it more.

Just like I said in the earlier post. I have seen more kids hurt or lose interest in riding with CR or race type bikes to start. The XR 50 - 100 cc bikes are tested & true bikes. You can sell them for damn near what you pay for them a year later.
I never sold my 87 XR250, kept it for backup. I rode CR 500's untill the hybrid 4-strokes came out. I am just as fast on that old 250 as the new CRF450X I ride now. And it's a lot of fun. Your whipping it the whole time. Start them on the XR's and they will be a lot better riders.

I'm listening to what you guys are saying here. Consequently, I think I'll probably start the 12y/o out with the CRF 150F and the 10y/o with a KLX 110. My wife and I can putz around with both of these too. Seat height is a big issue for the 10y/o as she is quite tiny. The little KLX will fit her and I figure I can mod the engine as needed over time to keep her interested.

Both of these are a big step above where I started many years ago: Benelli 65
