Fuel pump sounds normal? If if were me I would quickly check spark on the plugs and move on. I've never had plug or wire problems on my 996, but have had a fair number of fueling problems. 1st problem - bad TPS. 2nd problem - split fuel line inside the tank. Even something as simple as bad gas/water in gas would cause this.
