In Hord we Trust
After a fair bit of procrastination on my part a new motor is underway in the house of Hord. Glenn (Rothman's) has been a champion sourcing the base engine and shipping it to Ohio plus helping me track down some of the other parts I was after. Having read every post I could find both here and on Rogue concerning RC51 engine modifications in the end I went with a pretty conservative spec:
Balance and polish crank
OEM con rods
Wiseco pistons
Ported heads
Mori stage 1 cams (I would've gone with stock but these were there so I took 'em)
Durbahn lightweight clutch basket with OEM plates
Factory shift kit
This is not going to be a race motor. I have nothing but respect for the members here who've gone the full monty with custom hi lift cams and custom pistons etc. but all I'm after is a few more ponies. Originally I was just going to source some heads and have J.D. port them and ship them out ... then I figured why not have the man himself build the whole engine. The bike will probably see a few track days but for the most part it'll be for spirited canyon carving. The choice of J.D. Hord as a builder was an easy one for me given the support he has given with my RC31 over the years. I know given a free hand he'd rather lighten the crank and fit Carillo rods etc. but I was swayed by what I'd read from DSteward, EyeP & others regarding this and kept them stock. We are fitting a Durbahn clutch basket however so the thing should still spin up mighty fast. Hopefully J.D. will post up some pics of the motor taking shape and the end of this post will see it mounted in my bike here in Thailand ... though exactly how I'm gonna get it here I haven't figured out yet.
