I bought a 2001 900SSie in 2001. I remember the sales brochure saying one of the changes was that they switched to all air cooling from air/oil. If I remember correctly, the 98 (FE) and then for the new generation ‘99 was when they did away with external oil lines from the oil cooler to the cylinders. After 98 the oil was carried to oil jacket internally. In 01, they did away with oil completely. You can see the difference if you look at the size of the cooling fins on the 01 and up. The fins are much deeper because the oil jacket is gone.
