The 900's were all oil/air cooled, with an oil-filled jacket around the back cylinder and a smaller capacity one around the more exposed front cylinder.
This is why they spew oil all around the workshop as you're carrying them to your workbench after lifting them off the engine...
The only real difference is when they internalized the oil cooler drain into the alternator cover, in 1996 or thereabouts.
